“That’s pretty generous,” Laura said, smiling. “Way more generous than Jackson was with Cynthia.”
“There’s still the one-month cooling-off period, though. If it weren’t for that, I could get the divorce certificate tomorrow.”
If either of them decided to withdraw the application during the waiting period, the whole divorce would fall through. If she wanted out for good, she’d have to go to court.
She just hoped it would all go smoothly.
“For the next thirty days, I’m keeping my distance. As long as we don’t see each other and don’t talk, I doubt he’ll change his mind.”
If avoiding him wasn’t possible, she’d just give him the cold shoulder. Ethan was always so proud, there’s no way he could stand her freezing him out. That alone would keep him from having second thoughts.
Laura tried to reassure her. “Don’t worry, it’s not going to get complicated. Let’s look on the bright side.”
“Yeah, positive thoughts. If I hadn’t just gotten out of the hospital, I’d be dragging you out for drinks to celebrate my new life.”
“Give it a month. Once you have the divorce certificate and you’re fully recovered, we’ll have plenty of time to celebrate. Drinks are on me. We’ll invite Linda and Barbara, and the four of us won’t go home until we’re good and tipsy.”
Isabella laughed. “Deal. As soon as I get that certificate, you three are coming out with me. We’re celebrating, no excuses.”
“Absolutely.”
While Isabella was buzzing with excitement, Ethan found himself wandering the yard alone. He tried to remember if he and Isabella had ever spent time out here together after they got married, but nothing came to mind. They hardly ever took walks together.
Before he realized it, he’d ended up in front of the swing set and just stopped there.
He remembered Isabella sitting on this swing once after they got married. That was his only memory of her here.
After the divorce, this big house would be hers. In his dream, he’d done her wrong by throwing her out of the place she called home. He’d never do that to her in real life. From now on, this place would be hers. Always hers.
If she didn’t want Natalie visiting, then Natalie wouldn’t come. This was her home. She made the decisions. If she didn’t like the way it looked, she could redo it however she wanted.
Ethan sat down on the swing and stared out at the dark sky, his eyes clouded with pain.
His phone buzzed.
He glanced at the screen and saw Jordan’s name. After a brief hesitation, he answered.
“Hey, Jordan. What’s going on?”
Jordan sounded flustered. “Ethan, are you free right now? Can you come over? That woman is actually trying to move in. She even brought a suitcase. Natalie’s refusing to let her through the door.”
