Jordan took the beer and shot her a look. “It’s pretty late. What made you go out for drinks now?”
Malvina just shrugged. “I was in the mood for some barbecue and a cold beer, so I went out and got them.”
He grinned. “This isn’t even late for us. Remember those days we’d work overtime and barely get home before sunrise?”
She laughed and handed him a skewer. “You probably don’t eat stuff like this much, do you? I bet your wife wouldn’t let you touch street food.”
Jordan took the skewer and bit in. “It’s just street food. It’s not going to hurt me to have it once in a while.”
“It’s actually really good.”
He nodded, still chewing. “My wife definitely doesn’t eat at food stalls and she’d never let me, either. She likes fancy places, always something upscale.”
“If she wants barbecue, we just make it at home. Usually, I’m the one grilling for her.”
Malvina took a bite and glanced at him. “I heard you, your wife, and Mr. Adams have known each other since you were kids.”
She sighed, a little wistful. “I’m jealous, honestly. Most people don’t end up with their childhood friends. You and your wife are really lucky.”
She grinned. “And Mr. Adams is so sweet to your wife. I can always see how much he cares about her.”
Jordan smiled. “Yeah, Ethan, my wife, and I all grew up together. Ethan really is great to her. Sometimes, seeing how close the two of them are, I get a little jealous.”
He paused, looking down at his bottle. “But my wife loves me. She chose me. I trust her.”
Natalie always clung to Ethan, and he was the one who benefited from it. Jordan might get jealous sometimes, but he never blamed Natalie for it.
Malvina gave him a teasing smile. “You’re really something, Jordan. So generous.”
Isabella woke up feeling different. Usually, she would’ve wanted to stay in bed a little longer, but today she was wide awake and ready to get up. She washed up, changed her clothes, and went to the window. When she pulled back the curtains, warm sunlight filled the room.
The morning sun was gentle, not harsh like at noon. It made everything brighter, and just standing in that light made her feel lighter inside too.
From her window, she could only see a small corner of the courtyard. This room wasn’t as nice as her old one, but she’d given that up for Jennifer when she moved in. Even after Jennifer left, Isabella never moved back.
Still, she felt so good this morning that even a glimpse of the courtyard seemed beautiful.
Today was the day she would finally divorce Ethan.
For her, this was a real chance at a new life.
Last time, after her divorce, everything went wrong and she died a terrible death. But this time, her divorce with Ethan would be peaceful. The kidnappers who had ruined her life before had already been caught. That kind of tragedy wasn’t going to happen again.
