After I Stopped Loving Him (Isabella and Ethan) novel Chapter 696

Barbara ended the call and hurried over. The guy was just pulling himself up when Barbara’s foot landed hard on his head.

He yelped in pain.

Barbara glared at him. “You want to go back down by yourself, or do you need my help? It’s a long way down. If I kick you, you might not survive the landing.”

He shot her a hateful look through his mask, only his eyes showing. He was using a rope with a hook to climb.

If Barbara just unhooked the rope from the railing, he’d drop right off.

There were people waiting below. When they heard Barbara’s voice, they scrambled down the rope, their voices tense and hushed. “Hurry up, get down, let’s go!”

They’d set off the alarm breaking in, but they figured only Isabella was home. Even with the siren blaring, they stuck to their plan.

They hadn’t counted on someone else being there. And awake.

She might have been just one woman, but she was in control. They couldn’t do anything to her from where they were.

The guy on the wall didn’t dare climb up any farther. He started to slide back down. When he was about halfway, Barbara yanked the hook free from the railing. The hook slipped loose and he dropped to the ground, landing with a heavy thud.

It wasn’t enough to kill him.

But it would hurt. At the very least, he’d be nursing broken bones.

The two men on the ground rushed to help their friend and tried to make a run for it.

Barbara leaned over the rooftop and shouted, “Somebody stop them! I’m calling the cops!”

It turned out she wasn’t yelling at the thieves after all.

The three men looked up and saw a group of seven or eight guys closing in fast.

The house next door was all lit up.

That was Ethan’s place. He’d just bought it, finished the renovations on his master bedroom, and moved in tonight.

He never expected that on his very first night, his ex-wife’s house would get broken into.

“Ethan, do you know them?” Barbara asked.

Ethan shook his head. “Nope. Never seen them before. I’m sure.”

He gave the man another kick. “Talk. Who sent you?”

The man just clutched his stomach, groaning. “Nobody sent us. We just wanted to grab some stuff.”

“Oh, really? You know whose house this is? You picked the wrong place to rob.”

Ethan clearly wasn’t buying it.

The guy stuck to his story. “We’ve been watching this place for a while. We knew the old Mrs. Adams lived here, all by herself. That’s why we thought it was safe.”

Ethan snorted. “You knew it was Mrs. Adams’ house and you still tried? That’s just stupid.”

He kicked him again, then turned to Barbara. “Did you call the police?”
