After I Stopped Loving Him (Isabella and Ethan) novel Chapter 702

Jesse asking her to take responsibility was basically his way of proposing.

She was so flustered she couldn’t get out a single complete sentence. Seeing this, Jesse grinned. “Relax, I’m messing with you. I wouldn’t actually make you take responsibility.”

“I’m single anyway. A few more years won’t make a difference.”

“People can say whatever they want about us, as long as it’s not to our faces. It’s their business, not ours. If we don’t hear it, we can just pretend it never happened.”

He picked up the mop again and went back to cleaning.

Laura finally managed to speak. “If you really wanted to get married, there are tons of women who’d jump at the chance to be with you.”

“Jesse, I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve your attention. Honestly, I don’t think we’re the right fit.”

Jesse kept mopping and said, “I’m kind of stubborn. When I like someone, it’s for life. I like you, and it’d be great if we ended up together. But even if we don’t, I’m not marrying anyone else.”

“I have plenty of siblings. Even if I don’t have kids, I’ll have nieces and nephews to carry things on. It’s all the same.”

The Mason Group wasn’t just his—it belonged to the whole family. Even if he took over, he’d just be working for them. He’d rather run his own business.

Melissa was always pushing him to step up, but that was only because she wanted to focus on her own company and stop working for the family. No matter how well The Mason Group did, they only got a cut. Some family members did nothing and still got paid, while the ones in charge had to work themselves to the bone.

So Jesse wasn’t exactly excited about taking over. But it was his responsibility, something he’d never been able to avoid. Once Melissa stepped down as CEO, it would be his turn whether he liked it or not.

Ethan had always loved someone else. Isabella was only tricked, which was why she’d ended up divorcing him.

Jesse’s love life was spotless. Linda had said the Mason family was genuine, nothing like the snobbish Adams family. Jesse’s family had known for ages that he was chasing her, but they never gave her a hard time or told her to stay away.

She’d only met Melissa from his family, but that was because Jesse was worried they’d scare her off. He wouldn’t let anyone meet her without his say-so.

He always thought of her, always put her first.

Laura’s heart wasn’t made of stone. After all the warmth Jesse had given her, it was impossible not to soften.

“Go eat, okay? Don’t let yourself go hungry.”
