“You’re still here?” Isabella’s eyebrows knitted together in surprise.

She honestly thought Ethan would have lost patience and left by now. He was always busy, always running from one meeting to the next. At least, that’s how he used to be. Ever since they got married, he hadn’t seemed busy at all. She couldn’t tell if The Adams Group was struggling or if he’d just handed everything off to his cousins. Probably the latter. Every one of the Adams boys was a star in their own right, perfectly capable of handling the business. Even with Ethan barely working these past six months, the company was still at the top of its game.

“I was waiting for you,” Ethan said, his eyes lingering on her. “Isabella, you’re done for the day, right? Want to grab something to eat? Even though we’re divorced, we can still be friends. We’ve known each other for over twenty years.”

He had never sounded so humble. All this, just for a simple meal together.

Isabella kept her tone cool. “Ethan, I’m having dinner with a client. It wouldn’t be appropriate to bring you along.”

“Didn’t your client already leave?”

“Harold is also my client. We just signed a new contract.”

Ethan shot Harold a glare. Harold just smiled back, which only made Ethan more frustrated.

“Isabella, Harold and I go way back. We’re old friends. I’m sure he doesn’t mind if I join you.”

Harold spoke up, perfectly timed. “Actually, I do mind. Ethan, I don’t want to eat with you.”

That shut Ethan up immediately.

She walked right past him with Harold at her side.

Ethan made to follow, but Nana stepped in front of him.

“Mr. Adams, Isabella’s been very clear. Please stop following her. You’ll only make her dislike you more.”

Nana hadn’t been at the company long, but she’d heard all the stories about Isabella and Mr. Adams from the others. From a woman’s point of view, Nana was solidly on Isabella’s side. Mr. Adams could act all devoted now, but everyone knew the only person he ever really loved was Natalie. He was only trying to win Isabella back because he’d finally realized things with Natalie were never going to work out.

Honestly, Isabella was young and beautiful, with plenty of men lining up to get her attention. She wasn’t about to go running back to her ex. Everyone in the office agreed: as long as Natalie was still around, Mr. Adams would never really let go.
