Stephanie nodded. “Cynthia should be back from her trip soon. You know what to do when she gets here, right?”

Ethan nodded, a little too eagerly.

He said, “Cynthia really liked me at first. She treated me like her own son.”

Even when Isabella first brought up divorce, Cynthia never changed toward him. It was only when Isabella insisted, and Cynthia learned the truth about why he’d married her, that things turned cold.

Stephanie gave him a pointed look. “When Cynthia comes back, you need to win her over, and Isabella’s uncle too. They mean everything to her. If you can get their support again, it’ll help a lot.”

“And the biggest thing is your parents. You have to make them honestly accept Isabella this time. It can’t be like before, when you basically forced them to agree to your marriage. After the wedding, they just found their own ways to push back, giving Isabella the cold shoulder and never really letting her in. They even banned her from setting foot in the Adams Estate.”

Isabella will give up. The Carter family already welcomes her, but if your family can’t, even an idiot knows which side she’d pick. She’s been through a divorce, she’s not going to jump into marriage again without thinking. She’ll be careful, more rational, and take everything into account.”

Isabella wanted the divorce for lots of reasons. She was heartbroken and disappointed in him, but his family’s attitude definitely played a part.

At the end, his mother softened her tone, but deep down, she never really respected Isabella. Her biggest dream was for him to end up with Mia. But he only ever saw Mia as a sister. Maybe in the beginning, Mia thought about it, since her family was pressuring her to settle down, and Ethan seemed like a good choice. But after she came back from abroad and found out Ethan was married, met Isabella, and realized his old flame was Natalie, Mia was upfront with his mom. She said she’d always be a goddaughter, nothing more.

She told Ethan she would only ever be his sister, she didn’t want to come between him and Isabella, and she’d never be the other woman. Mia said there was no need to steal someone else’s husband.
