Julian whispered in her ear, The kid’s still growing. Don’t crowd him.

Louisa fell silent. Fine, whatever.

The old woman placed some fruit on the table, along with a basket of steaming cinnamon rolls. The aroma was mouthwatering.

She smiled warmly. Nothing fancy, I’m afraid. I just baked these cinnamon rolls. Please, help yourselves.

Everyone murmured thanks, but no one reached for the food right away. Becky broke the ice, taking a roll and nibbling at it. Noah didn’t

hesitate either, grabbing one and digging in.

Where’s my uncle and the others?Becky asked her grandmother. Why are you alone?

There’s a celebration in the neighboring village today. Your uncle and the others went. They won’t be back until late, the old woman

explained.

Becky looked surprised, then glanced apologetically at Sadie as if asking: What do we do now?

Sadie shook her head slightly, indicating it was fine. Vivian and Lily were already on their way, so finding the exact location didn’t matter much anymore. Vivian would lead them there.

The grandmother returned to the courtyard to continue washing vegetables.

Becky leaned toward Sadie and whispered, Since we’re already here, should I ask my grandmother about the place?

I’ll come with you,Sadie said, starting to rise.

No need,Becky insisted. You all rest. I’ll go ask.

With that, she left the room.

Only Julian, Louisa, and the others remained inside. Julian discreetly surveyed their surroundingsdust covered the windowsills and table

surfaces.

Louisa noticed his inspection and was about to ask him something when Noah reached for another cinnamon roll.

Sadie swatted his hand, keeping her voice low. How can you eat everything? Aren’t you worried about getting sick?

Noah looked hurt. I’m hungry! Besides, the cinnamon rolls are fine.

Sadie seemed unconvinced.

Louisa glanced at Julian.

The food is safe,he confirmed.

Hearing this, Jacob also took a roll and started eating. It was nearly evening, and after their long journey, everyone was hungry. Still,

Louisa, Sadie, and Julian abstained.

Noah finished eating and casually wiped his mouth. Alright, bathroom break. He disappeared before anyone could respond. What was with him, always eating or using the bathroom?

Fifteen minutes later, Becky returned. She huddled close to Sadie again, whispering, Sadie, my grandmother knows several places matching that description. I wrote them all down. Should we check them out?

How many places are there?Sadie asked. Are they far from here?

Grandma knows of three. One is right here in our village, not far away. The other two are in different villages. I’ve noted all the locations. If we move quickly, we can see them all before dark.

Great, let’s go now,Sadie said, starting to stand.

Becky quickly pulled her back down, glancing nervously toward Julian. Sadie, can we leave Julian behind? He makes meI’m afraid of him. Please, can we go without him?

Sadie laughed. Why are you afraid? He doesn’t bite.

Becky’s voice dropped even lower. I don’t know, I justmy heart races when I see him. He feelscold

Sadie fell silent. Cold? Julian wasn’t a ghost.

But Sadie, a lawyer with years of experience reading people, sensed something was off. She studied Becky with a meaningful look, realizing this woman was hiding something. Julian must have noticed it too. That’s why he’d followed themto protect Louisa.

Now, with darkness approaching, Julian would be even less likely to leave. And even if they wanted him gone, Sadie wasn’t the one who should ask. Julian rarely listened to others.

Sadie exchanged a glance with Louisa. Years of friendship had built a silent understanding that proved useful in moments like this.

Louisa caught Sadie’s meaning and, after a moment’s thought, turned to Julian. We’re going to look around. Don’t you have something to take care of? You should head back.

Julian didn’t argue. He checked his watch. Yes, I should get going.

As he stood, he leaned close to Louisa’s ear and whispered something. His lips brushed her ear as he spoke. No one else heard what he said, but Louisa’s face instantly flushed crimson, her earlobes turning so red they looked ready to drip blood.

Before leaving, Julian pulled a small carton of milk and a package of cookies from his pocket, placing them in Louisa’s hands. He

affectionately patted her head. I’m off. Be careful on the road. Try not to fall again.

Louisa didn’t say a word, not even daring to look at him.

Sadie leaned in with a grin. Julian’s really worried about you going hungry, isn’t he? At lunch in the restaurant, he ordered all your

favorites. Even though he was angry, he waited for you to finish eating before confronting you.

Then he gave you those grapes at the farmhouse. Now he’s carrying snacks for you? That’s nextlevel thoughtfulness.

Louisa looked down at the cookies and milk in her hands, still warm from Julian’s touch. Her heart gave a painful twinge.

Afterward, the group headed out. Sadie filled Louisa in on the three suspicious locations.

Becky sidled up to Louisa, curiosity getting the better of her. What did Julian whisper to you back there?

Louisa gave her a cool look. You want to know about our private conversation?

Becky immediately backpedaled. Oh, I get ithe was saying something romanticI’m sorry, I shouldn’t have asked.

Louisa just smiled. It’s fine.

They proceeded to check the locations Becky had mentioned, one by one. After visiting two places, Louisa’s expression grew thoughtful. Both locations seemed similar to what they were looking for, but something felt off about them.

They set off toward the third location.
