“The truth came out, but she’s also lost her only reason to live, Louisa explained A single mother whose only purpose was her son. First, she wanted to raise him, then to find him, and finally to avenge him.
Now that everything’s done, there might be nothing left to keep her going.”
Sadie nodded. ‘That makes sense.”
“Is it really that complicated?‘ Noah asked, glancing at Julian through the rearview mirror.
He desperately needed his boss to explain, ready to believe whatever Julian said. Nothing could stand in the way of hero worship.
But Julian wasn’t looking at him. His eyes were fixed on Louisa.
‘Here, Julian handed her his phone. “You send the message.”
Louisa took it, then immediately handed it back. “Shouldn’t you unlock it first?
Julian leaned close to her ear and whispered a string of numbers.
Louisa’s face flushed. Why was he giving her his passcode? Were they at that ‘check each other’s phones” stage in their relationship?
“Hurry up,” Julian prompted.
She reluctantly unlocked his screen, found Fabian’s number, and sent a message. Just as she was about to return the phone, Fabian called.
Answer it. Put it on speaker,” Julian instructed.
Louisa did as told.
“Thanks for your concern,” Fabian’s cheerful voice came through. “My sister used to talk about joining Mark once she’d avenged him. I was worried about
that too.
“But you don’t need to worry anymore. My sister and Becky are both alone now, they’ve decided to live together. Things will get better from here. I
promise.”
After the call ended, Fabian sent a photo. It showed Anissa and Becky standing in sunlight, smiling at each other. Anissa’s eyes had regained their sparkle.
Becky wasn’t wearing her mask or hat anymore–the long scar exposed in the sunlight somehow seemed less terrifying.
Two people who had endured tremendous suffering, whose hearts had been twist by pain and hidden in darkness, had finally returned to their original
softness. They had found their light and a reason to live.
Looking at the image, Louisa felt moved. “They can finally put down their burder and be themselves.”
Julian sat beside her, watching her happiness for others. He gently brushed her eyebrow with his fingertips. “Yes, they can finally be themselves. I wonder when our Louisa will let go of her past and be brave enough to be herself too?”
His voice was soft yet clear, like a pristine mountain spring under moonlight. Losa’s heart tightened. She didn’t dare respond or even think too deeply about what he meant, quickly returning his phone.

By five in the afternoon, they collected their luggage and prepared to return to tverlight City. They had arrived in two separate cars–allian with Teddy and Noah in one, Louisa with Sadie and Jacob in the other.
Louisa didn’t dare ride with Julian again. Too dangerous. She immediately loaded her luggage into her car and hastily said goodbye Have a safe trip back. See you.” Then, pretending not to notice his darkening expression, she quickly slipped into her vehicle.
The two cars set off one after another.
On the road, drowsiness overtook Louisa. After the prolonged struggle with Vivian and her family, everything was finally over. The weight on her chest had lifted. She told Jacob to drive carefully, then leaned against Sadie and fell asleep
Sadie smiled affectionately, not minding the contact.
Jacob, driving in front, kept glancing in the rearview mirror with concern. “Sadie, are you tired? We could switch at the service area if you want.”
Sadie saw right through her brother’s thoughts. “Mind your own business. Someone behind us is getting impatient.”
Her foolish brother still didn’t understand–Julian would never let Louisa go to anyone else. Jacob needed to move on.
They did stop at a service area during the trip, but Louisa slept soundly through it all, not even noticing when someone else took Sadie’s place beside her
By the time they exited the highway and entered Silverlight City, night had fallen completely. Louisa stirred groggily, glanced at the night scenery outside. then closed her eyes again. She snuggled against the person next to her, her hand brushing against their chest.
Something felt wrong. The texture wasn’t right–not as soft as expected.
She felt around again, mumbling sleepily, “Sadie, where’s your chest?”
A deep, magnetic voice responded from above her head: “Isn’t it right there? Keep looking, don’t lose it.”
Louisa’s wandering hand froze. That voice…
Please don’t let it be Julian.
But her prayer went unanswered. Her hand was pressed against firm, solid pectoral muscle. Worse still, her fingers were pinching what was unmistakably a
nipple.
Louisa was now wide awake–or more accurately, shocked awake. She couldn’t bring herself to look up at Julian.
She distinctly remembered getting into her own car before leaving. Jacob was driving. She had fallen asleep leaning against Sadie.
How had she woken up next to a completely different person? This was like a one night stand where you realize you slept with the wrong person.
‘Not going to continue your search? Julian’s smooth breath came closer.
He took her hand, still pressed against his right pectoral, and moved it to the let You should be thorough. Check both sides. You’re not one to give up easily, after all.”
