Julian’s warm breath tickled her ear as he spoke in a low voice meant only for her.

Louisa froze, her cheeks burning crimson. What was Julian doing in the break room? And why was he holding her like this, whispering in her ear? Worst of all, he’d been eavesdropping on her conversation.

“I was rude this morning and shouldn’t have snapped at you,” she said, finding her voice, “but don’t you think listening to my private

conversations is crossing a line?”

Julian held up his water bottle. “I had a lunch meeting, but Teddy went in my place. Had to get my own water for once. I wasn’t trying to

eavesdrop–you were just really into your conversation.”

Louisa wanted to die. Why did all her most embarrassing moments happen in front of him?

Julian turned her to face him, but she resisted. “It’s work hours,” she protested.

“It’s lunch break,” he corrected, setting his water bottle on the counter. His hands tightened around her waist as he pressed his forehead

against hers. “So can I spend some of that break time chatting with my girlfriend?”

Girlfriend. Right. He’d mentioned that last night. He would respect her wish not to commit, but she had to respect his decision to treat

her as his girlfriend. His strategy was diabolically clever.

“Having second thoughts?” Julian asked, reading her silence.

Louisa took a deep breath. “I’m not backing out, but…could we slow down a bit?”

She was still adjusting to this change in their relationship. You couldn’t expect someone to ride a rollercoaster right after getting off a

pirate ship.

Julian didn’t seem upset. “Fine. If you don’t want others to know, I’ll give you time. But there has to be a deadline, right?”

His voice was gentle but somehow still commanding.

Louisa couldn’t dodge the question. “Three months. Is that okay?”

Julian nodded. “That works.”

She relaxed slightly, but then Julian added: “But when we’re alone, I can kiss my girlfriend, right?”

Before she could object, his lips were on hers in a deep kiss.

Julian smiled against her lips. “Alright, let’s go back to my office.”

Once inside his office with the door closed, he pressed her against it and kissed her deeply. Louisa felt breathless when she finally pushed him away. “Didn’t you call me up here for lunch?”

Julian’s dark eyes focused on her lips. “Sorry. Couldn’t help myself.”

His words sent her heart racing. Throughout lunch, she couldn’t taste a thing. As soon as they finished, she hurried back to her

department.

Later that afternoon, Teddy called her. He’d had too much to drink at lunch and needed her help in the executive office.

Louisa immediately refused. She couldn’t go up there again. A man with thirty–plus years of sexual abstinence who suddenly started

having sex was terrifying.

When Teddy reported her refusal to Julian, his boss’s face darkened. “I heard,” Julian said coldly.

This woman only wanted to be around him when sex was involved. It irritated him.

For the rest of the afternoon, the executive office was filled with a chilly atmosphere. Louisa remained blissfully unaware.

After work, she went to the restroom, then returned to her office to take Sadie’s call inviting her to dinner. Louisa accepted.

As she headed toward the elevator, the building was mostly empty–those who had finished work were gone, while others were still in their offices. When the elevator arrived, Louisa entered with her eyes on her phone.

“Leaving for the day, Ms. Forbes?”

She looked up to find Julian’s impossibly handsome face staring down at her. Teddy stood beside him.

This wasn’t right. Didn’t Julian have his private elevator? She glanced around, confirming they were indeed in the public elevator. Outside, several employees were waiting but wouldn’t enter with the CEO inside.

“Yes, I am,” she said awkwardly. “Please go ahead, Mr. Tudor. I can wait for the next one,”

But a beautiful hand reached out and pressed the button, closing the doors.

Trapped, Louisa rode down with them. Teddy broke the silence. “Any plans tonight, Louisa?”

She gave him a strange look. Teddy avoided her eyes–Julian had clearly put him up to asking.

Despite finding the question odd, she answered, “Dinner at Sadie’s place.” Then she pointedly added, “I won’t be going home tonight.”

“What’s the problem? I’ve stayed there before,” Louisa countered.

Julian gave her a cool look. “Don’t you know her brother is staying there?”

Louisa went silent. She actually hadn’t known that.

How did Julian know?

“Or perhaps,” Julian added casually, his voice dripping with jealousy, “You’re looking forward to seeing Ms. Watson’s brother?”
