Chapter 323
Louisa sighed with exhaustion. Wasn’t that situation ancient history? Why was he still bringing it up?
“I honestly didn’t know her brother was staying there,” she said wearily. “Fine, I’ll just sleep at my own place tonight.”
There. Happy now? She really had no defense against him.
But Julian’s expression remained distinctly unhappy as they exited the elevator.

Julian walked ahead while Louisa fell into step beside Teddy, who leaned in to whisper, “What’s with Mr. Tudor today? He’s acting weird. I
mean, he’s not your boyfriend–why does he care where you sleep?”
Louisa couldn’t respond. The guilt was overwhelming.
They each got into their cars and drove out of the parking garage. Though heading to the same destination, Louisa got a call from Sadie just as she approached Cozy Community. They needed more food–could she stop by the supermarket?
By the time Louisa arrived at Sadie’s apartment forty minutes later, Jacob answered the door.
“Louisa!” he greeted her cheerfully.
She smiled back. “Jake! You really are here. Didn’t your sister say you found a summer job?”
Jacob looked slightly embarrassed as he took the grocery bags from her. “Yeah, but I’m still looking.”
“Want me to help you find something?” she offered.
“You’re always so good to me,” he said with a shy smile.
Louisa playfully ruffled his hair. The moment she did, the temperature in the living room seemed to drop several degrees.
She turned toward the source of the chill and froze. Julian? What was he doing here?
Her knees felt weak. Was there anywhere he wouldn’t show up?
Julian sat elegantly on the sofa, giving her an icy look. “Ms. Forbes, you’re quite attentive, aren’t you? Even more concerned about the
brother than his own sister is.”
Louisa bristled. It was bad enough that Julian had followed her to Sadie’s, but now he was throwing shade at her?
As if hearing her thoughts, Julian said coolly, “Sadie invited me.”

Louisa fell silent.
Just then, Teddy and Noah emerged from the kitchen–one with eyes streaming from onion–cutting, the other looking completely defeated.
Ignoring Julian, Louisa addressed the others. “You guys take a break. I’ll help out.”
She escaped to the kitchen.

In the living room, Teddy grabbed tissues to wipe his tears while Noah crouched beside Julian. “Is Ms. Forbes mad at you?” he whispered.
Julian gave him a chilling look.
Noah smacked his own mouth. He shouldn’t have asked.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Louisa washed vegetables while Sadie nudged her arm. “Something’s off with you, she whispered.
“What do you mean?”
“Are you mad at Mr. Tudor?”
Louisa frowned. “He shows up at your place without warning. Why wouldn’t I be annoyed?”
Sadie laughed. “That’s not fair. Mr. Tudor and I have a decent relationship. I’m thrilled he’d come to dinner! Don’t make this awkward,
okay?”
Louisa stayed quiet. Of course she understood–someone of Sadie’s position would rarely get to share a meal with Julian Tudor. This was a
good opportunity for her.
She didn’t want to cause problems. She just felt uncomfortable. She and Julian had agreed to keep their relationship secret, yet here he was at Sadie’s apartment. It felt like a violation of their agreement.
Sadie studied her face. “Getting upset over something this small isn’t like the old you.”
“What do you mean? Louisa asked.
“You used to bottle everything up. No matter how angry you were, you’d never show it. But look at you now–expressing your feelings openly. You’re finally acting like a normal girl.”
Normal. The word hit Louisa like a lightning bolt.
She suddenly remembered something Julian had said not long ago–that she only seemed like a normal person when she was angry. She’d thought he was just teasing her at the time.

“Was I not normal before?” she asked Sadie quietly.
Sadie put down the potato she was peeling and looked at Louisa seriously. “It’s not that you weren’t normal. You just suppressed yourself
too much.
“Think about when you were with George. How much did you endure just to win his parents‘ approval? Even with George himself, you
never allowed yourself to get unreasonably angry or throw tantrums, did you?
“But with Mr. Tudor? You pout, you get mad, you seem brighter and happier. You’re not constantly trying to please others. You put your
own feelings first. That’s how a young woman should be.”
Louisa was stunned by this observation. Thinking about it, Sadie was right.
With Julian, she felt free to be herself most of the time.
So Julian’s comment about her being “normal” when angry–was that what he meant? She felt a strange warmth spreading through her
chest.
At dinner, she sat next to Julian and poured him a bowl of soup. “Mr. Tudor, soup for you,” she said, placing it in front of him.
Julian raised an eyebrow in surprise. “Not angry with me anymore? His tone was remarkably gentle.
Everyone at the table stared in shock.
Was that Julian Tudor’s voice? The way he spoke sounded like a boyfriend soothing his girlfriend.
Teddy’s jaw dropped. Noah’s silverware clattered onto the table. Jacob glared at Julian with hostility. Only Sadie smiled knowingly as she
calmly ate her food.
Finally, Noah blurted out, “Ms. Forbes, are you and Mr. Tudor together? You are, aren’t you?”
“No! Don’t say ridiculous things!” Louisa panicked, shooting Julian a warning look.
But Julian made no effort to explain, just continued sipping his soup elegantly.
Louisa pinched his waist under the table.
Julian smoothly captured her hand in his and smiled at the group. “Let’s just eat, shall we? No need for conversation that might upset someone and make her angry with me again.”
Teddy and Noah lowered their heads, grinning uncontrollably.
Louisa glared at Julian: ‘You call that an explanation? One more word and the whole world will know about us.‘

She kicked his leg under the table.

Julian didn’t flinch, letting her vent her frustration. He leaned close and whispered, ‘You can beat me up all you want tonight. For now,
let’s eat in peace.”
