Louisa was about to ask more when the car stopped.

Looking out the window, they’d arrived at Cozy Community’s underground parking garage.

Julian said to Teddy, “You can head back.”

“Yes,”

Teddy got out and left.

Only Julian and Louisa remained in the car.

Seeing Julian wasn’t in a hurry to get out, Louisa stayed put, too.

She was still thinking about her earlier question.

Julian spoke first: “If you want to strike out on your own, with your business acumen, investment banking would be perfect. So, do you want to start by being my Investment Director to get some practice?”

Louisa was immediately drawn back into this topic, forgetting her previous question.

And with him putting it like that, she felt her blood pumping with excitement. She flashed him a sweet smile: “Then I’ll practice first.

‘Good girl.”

Julian was dazzled by the smile on her face. Unable to help himself, he lowered his head to kiss her.

Louisa was momentarily stunned.

Sure, there was no one else in the car now, but…

He’d been kissing her for two days straight. Still wasn’t satisfied?

She wrapped her arms around his neck and returned his kiss.

The next day, when Louisa walked into the Investment Department, she received congratulations all along the way.

She even ran into Teresa.

Teresa didn’t say a word to her, just shot her a vicious glare before walking off.

When Louisa entered the Investment Department, the congratulations grew even more enthusiastic.

After nodding her acknowledgments, Louisa went into her office.

Marlee followed her in, equally excited. “Ms. Forbes, you got promoted! HR just announced it. Why don’t you seem happy at all?”

Louisa: ‘Is this something to be happy about?

Her tone was flat, betraying no particular joy.

Marlee: ‘How is this not worth celebrating? Think about all the trouble Teresa’s caused us lately. We’ve finally pushed her out. No one can block our path

anymore.

Louisa: “How do you know there’s no one left?”

Marlee looked even more puzzled. “She’s gone, you’ve been promoted who else could possibly block you?”

Louisa sighed.

She’d been promoted, yes.

But Teresa hadn’t left at all.

Teresa had left the office during work hours without taking anything with her, which meant she wasn’t leaving the company, but going to find Adeline to

plead her case.

The war was just beginning.

Louisa asked Marlee: “So has Teresa been demoted?”

Marlee: “Yeah, she didn’t even get to keep a Deputy Director position. She was demoted straight down to Team Seven Leader. But weirdly, her office hasn’t been moved. That’s the biggest, most luxurious office in our department. Logically, since you’ve been promoted, shouldn’t your office move there? They demoted her but didn’t reduce her perks. What’s that about?”

Louisa shook her head. “I don’t know either. Whatever, it’s just an office. I’m already used to this one.”

She didn’t even value the Director position much

None of this was important to her. What she was thinking now was whether she shouldn’t have been swayed by Julian into accepting the Director position.

She really didn’t want direct conflict with Adeline.

But Julian had been right about one thing – if she wanted to strike out on her own in the future, she really did need to achieve something substantial at the

Tudor Group.

Back at the Capulet Group, once George had seen her value and capabilities, he’d thought to diminish her authority, placing her in some inconsequential position where she wouldn’t attract attention.

Julian, on the other hand, wanted to give her a solid platform to shine as brightly as possible.

He was genuinely good to her.

But the better he was to her, the more her heart ached.
