Adeline’s legs felt weak, unsteady.

She wanted to call her husband over.

Her son was too frightening.

But before she could call for William, Julian spoke first, making a polite gesture. “Please, have a seat.”

Adeline sat down instinctively.

Julian sat in the chair beside her.

Adeline asked with concern, “Have you eaten? Would you like some fruit?”

She passed him the plate of freshly cut, expensive fruit.

Julian placed the bracelet on the coffee table and gazed out at the distant stars.

His tone was casual. “Oh, one more thing. I demoted Teresa again.”

Adeline had just raised her floral tea to calm her nerves when she heard this. The tea caught in her throat, triggering a coughing fit.

Julian considerately pulled out two tissues and handed them to her.

Adeline took them and wiped her mouth.

Julian said, “I originally wanted her out of the company. Then you put her in the Assistant Director position.” He shrugged. “Fine. I figured I’d use her presence to show Louisa something–that even with Teresa right under my nose every day, I still won’t have feelings for her.”

One shock after another left Adeline reeling for a long time.
