After the Affair: Falling into a Billionaire’s Arms
Chapter 497
Adeline shot a warning glare at her troublemaking daughter: Stay out of it.
By now, Kenna had figured out something was off and was about to deflect.
But before she could speak, the girl had already introduced herself. “I’m Layla Scott.”
Her introduction was poised and confident, radiating self–assurance and warmth.
William and Adeline exchanged a glance. They both found her quite pleasant.
Though she wasn’t the person Adeline was looking for, the girl seemed nice enough–and rather suitable for Jonathan.
Jonathan was so quiet. A sunny girl like this might brighten him up.
So Adeline perked up again. If she couldn’t find her green–dress savior, at least she could introduce her eldest son to a suitable match.
That wasn’t a bad outcome either.
She asked Layla a few questions about her family background.
The conversation flowed smoothly, and Adeline approved of everything she heard.
After all, she didn’t have overly demanding standards for a daughter–in–law. As long as the family background was respectable, the character sound, and the appearance acceptable, the rest didn’t matter much.
This turn of events left Kenna somewhat confused.
She thought Adeline had accepted Layla as the green–dress girl and immediately sought credit. “It must be fate between the Tudor and Scott families. Just yesterday, you told me you hadn’t made any progress finding her. Then this morning, I was playing cards with Mrs. Scott, and she mentioned her daughter had bruised her arm. When I asked about it, I found out Ms. Scott had attended Mrs. Boleyn’s masquerade a few days ago with three friends and gotten hurt. I asked about the details, and everything matched exactly what you told
Kenna grew more excited as she spoke.
The Tudors were a top–tier elite family, and the Scotts were jewelry magnates. This meeting had been arranged at the request of both Adeline and Mrs. Scott–she was earning goodwill from both sides.
But she didn’t realize that Adeline had already determined Layla was not the person she was looking for.
Adeline said tactfully, “You may have made a mistake. Ms. Scott is not the person I’m looking for. But that’s all right–I do like Ms. Scott.
It’s nice to meet her.”

Kenna was stunned. “She’s not?”
All the details had matched. How could she be wrong?
Could it be that Mrs. Scott had deceived her?
Kenna realized the truth–Mrs. Scott was like everyone else: she had her eye on the Tudor family, on Julian, and wanted her daughter to
marry into the family.
But now Adeline had already said it was a mistake.
Kenna didn’t want to offend Adeline. She quickly tried to smooth things over with an awkward laugh. “Oh, I must have gotten it wrong
then. I’m so sorry…”
“It was me that night!” Before Kenna could finish, Layla cut her off sharply, her tone brimming with confidence.
Adeline fell silent.
She was at a loss for words.
Confidence was a good quality. She liked confident girls. But confidence applied to lying was something else entirely.
She couldn’t bring herself to like that.
Alicia took a sip of tea and smiled sweetly at Layla. “Ms. Scott, why don’t you tell us the details? We’ve had several people come by these past few days, all claiming to be the one. It’s left my mother rather confused.”
Her words were deliberately leading.
Kenna frantically gestured at Layla to stop and quickly interjected, “Mrs. Tudor has already said it’s not her, so there must have been a mistake. After all, everyone was wearing masks that night. It’s natural to get mixed up.”
But Layla didn’t catch Kenna’s hints. She said firmly, “There’s no mistake. It was me that night.”
Kenna nearly burst into tears. Was this girl an idiot? How could she not read the room or understand what people were saying?
Now she’d failed to earn goodwill from either side and had managed to alienate both.

Layla continued confidently, “I ran into Mrs. Tudor in the hallway that night. You were about to go choose a mask. I went with you to pick one out–a purple mask. Then we entered the ballroom together. I’d gone with three friends, so we split up afterward. Later, the tarot reader Mrs. Boleyn had invited gave me a hard time. When I tried to leave, I realized there was no signal in the room and the door was
locked. You and I left through the side exit together. Don’t you remember?”
Adeline was stunned. She hadn’t expected Layla to get every detail right.

This was bizarre.

It wasn’t surprising that Layla knew what happened in the ballroom. But when they’d chosen masks, only a handful of people had been
present. How could Layla possibly know about that?
Julian, who had been quietly listening the entire time, now wore a cold expression.
Adeline was silent for a long moment before asking Layla, ‘Do you remember how we got out of the club?”
Layla answered without hesitation. “We jumped out a window!”
The correct answer left Adeline truly confused.
She was certain Layla wasn’t her green–dress savior. But how did Layla know about jumping out the window?
Adeline steadied herself and asked one more question. “Do you remember what you said to me when we parted?”
Layla’s expression shifted slightly.
But she quickly put on a thoughtful look and shook her head slowly. “It was such a chaotic night. I can’t quite recall what I said at the
moment.”
Amelia smiled sweetly. “Think about it. Really think. If you answer this question correctly, you’ll pass.”
Layla was at a loss for words. Beads of sweat appeared on her forehead.
She racked her brain and finally came up with something. “I think I said… ‘Stay safe, and maybe we’ll meet again someday.”
Adeline smiled slowly and said with certainty, “I don’t know how you know all those details, but I’m absolutely sure you’re not the person
