Her shriek echoes through the dungeon, but it doesn’t faze Sadie and neither does it faze me.
“Alec!” Lola cries. “How can you allow this? How can you let her treat me like this?”
“Why should I care?” I say flatly. “You brought this on yourself when you lied.”
She stops struggling. Her eyes widen, finally understanding that the Alec she once knew is long gone.
Sadie steps closer, her expression blank and cold.
“Why,” she begins, “did you lie three years ago?”
Lola swallows. “W-what are you talking about?”
“You lied about being his mate,” Sadie replies, her eyes glowing brighter. “And I want to know why.”
“I didn’t lie—”
Sadie plunges a knife into Lola’s side.
Lola screams and Knox lets out a dark, satisfied growl.
Sadie pulls the knife out slowly, blood dripping down her hands.
“For every wrong answer,” she says calmly, “I will do that again.”
Lola trembles hard, pain ripping through her body.
I should feel something. Maybe pity, but I feel nothing except the looming, crushing fear of losing Sadie. Her fury is cold enough to burn. Her silence toward me was sharp enough to carve out my insides.
And watching her like this? It kills me, because it reminds me of the version of Sadie from months ago. The version of her that hated me. The version I thought I’d never see again.
Knox presses forward, his voice raw. “We’ll fix this, Alec. We have to.”
I swallow hard, watching the woman I love stand in front of the woman who I once thought was my mate. The woman whose lies caused me to hurt my fated mate in ways I’ll never be able to undo.
It kills me that once again Lola might just cost me Sadie. It’s like history repeating its fucking self.
“Tell me,” Sadie growls. “Why did you lie about being his mate?”
“I didn’t lie,” Lola growls, her teeth clenched. “I am his mate. We felt the bond. I’m destined to be his.”
“Now that’s a lie,” I cut in. “Sadie is my fated mate, and you’re the imposter.”
Lola’s eyes flash to me. “What nonsense are you spouting? She isn’t your mate. I am.”

“Yes!”
“Forgive me,” Jason cuts in, “But you don’t exactly look like someone who’s been locked up for years.”
“That because I escaped two months ago,” she says, not even flinching.
All of a sudden laughter fills the room and I turn to find Sadie clutching her stomach.
“Gosh, you’re good, I’ll give you that,” Sadie says when her laugh finally dies down. “I’d actually believe you if I didn’t know you were lying.”

I clench my teeth and take a deep breath. “Do you honestly think I’d believe you? Do you take me for a fucking fool, Lola?”
“I’m telling you the truth; why won’t you believe me?” Her eyes fill with tears as she looks at me.
“Damn, Lola. I have to hand it to you… you’re a really good actress.” No wonder I fell for her lies about us being mates.
“Enough!” Sadie cuts in. “I want answers and you’re going to give them to me.”
And as she continues torturing her, I swear I see Lola’s eyes glow in the same way Sadie’s do.
