By the time I leave the dungeon, my pulse is still thrumming with leftover power, my fingers trembling from the effort it took not to rip every answer out of Lola by force, but seeing her, I know that wouldn’t have done shit.
The look in her eyes still bothers me. I can feel something is wrong deep inside. A truth that is screaming inside me, but I can’t hear it because it’s muffled under the weight of something.
It’s hard to explain it, but I get this feeling about her that I just can’t place no matter how I try.
It’s so strange when I think about it, because three years ago, I didn’t feel like this. I didn’t feel like I was drawn to her… She was just Lola. The woman who was everything I wasn’t. The woman who had the man I loved. I didn’t hate her; more like I wished I was her.
Either way, something is different now. There is something with her now that wasn’t there before. Something that, beyond the anger, the bitterness and my need for answers, draws me to her.
I push the heavy iron door shut behind me and lean against it for a moment, exhaling shakily.
“Sadie.”
I look up to see King and Raven waiting for me in the dim corridor. Their expressions are full of concern.
“Are you okay?” he says, stepping closer. “We were looking for you and your scent led us here.”
“I’m fine,” I lie, because admitting otherwise might crack something inside me. Again.
“Are you sure?” Raven asks, arching a brow. “You look like you’re about to pass out.”
I sigh. “Everything is just a lot right now.”
They exchange a glance before King nods toward the stairs. “Come on. Let’s get you out of this depressing cave.”
I follow them up and outside into the fresh air, settling beside them in a quiet corner of the training field. The breeze feels good on my overheated skin, but not enough to help calm the storm of thoughts, feelings and nerves inside me.
King studies me closely. “Raven has filled me in on everything that has been happening, especially with the arrival of Lola. I guess it’s why you went to see her again?”
“Yes,” I reply, “And just like yesterday I got nothing from her.”
“Do you want me to help… You know I can get her singing.”
I can’t stop the chuckle that escapes my lips. If you think my torture methods are bad, then you haven’t seen King. He actually takes pleasure in doing it, and that what makes him dangerous.
“Trust me, that won’t do shit.”
Raven frowns. “What do you mean?”
“I don’t know how to put it, but something is different about Lola… My powers didn’t scare her, and the way she carried herself, the way she behaved? It’s like she has the confidence of someone who knows nothing and no one can break her.”
“Seriously?” King asks incredulously.
I just nod my head, because I’m still lost for words. I’ve tortured my share of vampires, werewolves, witches and even humans, and they always tap out, but not Lola.
“Yes. The look she gave, is strange… almost like a cat playing with a mouse, knowing sooner or later it’ll catch it and, in this analogy, she’s the cat and I’m the mouse.”
Chills run down my spine when I remember the cold look in her eyes.
I turn and face the field I’d destroyed. “I saw it in her eyes, and what’s there goes beyond what happened three years ago with Alec.”

I close my eyes, fighting back the relief. I can’t wait for this to finally be over and we go back to our pack.
I don’t know what will happen between me and Alec, but I just want to put this all behind me.
Before I can respond, a loud horn blares from the front gates.
King’s head snaps toward the sound. “Is that what I think it is?”
I stand quickly. “Yeah.”
Raven blinks. “What?”
“The first wave of guests for the annual ball.” I explain.
Since Raven has never been part of a coven, she doesn’t know what the blaring horn means. Alec’s pack, being one of the strongest, has hosted the annual ball before, but that was when I was like ten years old.
My heart stutters. With everything that has happened since Alec told me about it, I just kind of forgot about it.

Alec soon approaches, coming from the pack house, his presence brushing like warm static along my spine.
I don’t move from my spot. Instead, I focus on the guest, even as I try to push a heavy feeling down.
