“Are you ok, Nicky?” Her sweet voice brings me back to the present but she must see more on my face that I don’t mean to show because she suddenly shrinks back from me and that one move alone is enough to bring me back to my senses. “No, Bonnie, Please don’t do that. My voice is harsh but I try to keep my tone calm and as soft as I can, but I can feel the pressure building up inside of me and I’m not sure how long I can last.
“But… aren’t you mad at me?” Her voice is small and scared and I fucking hate it. That little fireball that I saw in her earlier, I want to see it again and now! “Why would I be mad at you?” She spends a few seconds looking at me like she can’t figure out how I don’t already know the answer to that question.
“Because of how I am? Because of the trouble that follows me? Because you decided you wanted me only to find out that I am weak and pathetic and now you either have to reject me or be saddled with a sad excuse of a wolf!” By the time she finishes talking, she’s almost shouting but it just has me laughing as I watch that spark of fire relight inside of her eyes. “That’s it, just laugh at me. I don’t care!” The moment she says those words I instantly realize my mistake. She may say she doesn’t care but she does, and that’s why she’s so upset. That’s why she has a look of anger on her face while tears of sadness run down her beautiful cheeks.
I move closer to her and take both of her hands in one of mine, she tries to pull back but I stop her. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. I wasn’t laughing at you, I promise. I was just happy that some of that little fireball of yours showed it’s face. Even though I’m not sure why I laughed, I promise it wasn’t in any bad way.” She gives me a doubtful look which is understandable but hopefully, this cute little creature will give me the time to prove my words to her, all of them.
“First off to clear something up, I am not mad at you, not in the slightest. I’m not sure why I would be mad about how you are, but I know that I’m not mad about any trouble that could follow you. If there’s any trouble following you then I will deal with it. Now, as for you saying that you are weak and pathetic that does make me a little mad because you are so wrong. From the short time that I’ve known you I have seen nothing but strength and courage and honesty I’m awed by you.”
“You barely know me.”
“That may be true but I’m your mate and an Alpha and my senses and instincts are up there with the best. And while I may not have spoken to you much since you have been here which by the way is a shame on me, I have still watched you and not once have I seen anything weak.”
“As for your family, do you want anything more to do with them?” She tilts her head and I watch as her mind races with thoughts and at the same time I feel her pulse in her wrist pick up. “Breathe, darling.” She gives me a gentle smile that makes my heart pound and Storm drool in my head. This is the quietest he’s been since we met her, also the nicest he has been to me too, not that I blame him.
Finally, after several seconds, she shakes her head. “I don’t, I don’t but I may have no choice.” I can feel her start to panic so I start to gently run my thumb over the back of her hand hoping to help her. “Why do you say that?” She’s starting to look tired and I have a feeling that she’s going to need to sleep soon, but I’m hoping that she can tell me a little more first. Am I being selfish? Probably but I can’t help myself because deep down there is a part of me that’s still shocked that she’s being so open with me after how I’ve treated her, and I’m afraid that when she goes back to sleep she won’t want to speak to me anymore.
“I’m outside the hospital talking with Uncle Will. Are you ok?”
“Yes, but I need to get out of here. I need to run or something… I don’t know what… I just need a little time and Bonnie is sleeping but I won’t leave her alone and-”
“I’m on my way. I’ll protect her, Dad. I promise!” Thankfully, she interrupted my rambling with the words that I needed to hear and was inside the room in just seconds. Once she’s settled and I know my mates safe I head outside only I’m greeted by all of my brothers as they all stand around in shorts and nothing else.
All of them disagree and insist on coming, the love I feel from them making my heart thud. “Theo has been a nightmare since the ball but he won’t tell me why so I’m hoping a run will chill him out because I’m about 4 seconds away from disowning the prick!” Will grunts making us laugh as we head for the woods. Fuck, where would I be without these guys?
