Chapter 23: Theodore’s Past

Chapter 23: Theodore’s Past

(Amelia’s POV)

The medicine I gave you won’t kill you,I told Ethan casually, watching his terrified expression. But it will make you wish you were dead.

Ethan’s eyes widened in disbelief. You’re bluffing. There’s no such poison.

I smiled coldly. As long as you behave, I’ll provide the antidote regularly. If notI snapped my fingers.

Instantly, Ethan’s body convulsed. He clutched his stomach, his face contorting in agony as if his internal organs were being twisted into knots. Sweat poured down his face as he writhed on the ground.

After a minute, I snapped my fingers again, and the pain subsided. Ethan lay there, his face ashen, teeth clenched as he glared at me with impotent rage.

The realization that his life was completely in my hands seemed to finally sink in. He closed his eyes in despair, all fight gone from his body.

I dusted off my hands and turned to Theodore. Ethan’s injuries are too severe for him to return to the Stone River Pack directly. Would you mind keeping him for now? I’ll come get

him tomorrow.

Theodore nodded. Of course.

He gestured to Marcus, who effortlessly hoisted Ethan over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. The four pack warriors Ethan had brought were also escorted out, leaving Theodore and me alone in the abandoned factory.

I find you interesting,I said, studying Theodore’s face. I’d like to know more about you.

Theodore smiled. I’d be happy to share, but this place is rathergrim. Let me take you somewhere more pleasant.

Lead the way,I agreed readily.

Theodore took me to a secluded camping spot at the base of a mountain, beside a small stream. The setting sun cast a golden glow over the peaceful scene.

I sat down on the grass, enjoying the evening breeze. I stretched lazily, feeling the tension

leave my body.

Did you build this camping spot?I asked.

Theodore nodded. I come here when I need to clear my head.

I laughed. What could possibly trouble someone like you before your legs were injured? You had everythingwealth, status, the most powerful pack. Your biggest worry was probably having too much money to spend.

The sunset illuminated Theodore’s handsome profile, giving him a golden aura like a Greek statue. The sight made my heart skip a beat.

Theodore chuckled at my teasing. You’re right. Life was smooth sailing before. My socalled troubles were just pack matters not meeting expectations.

His expression grew more serious. But after losing the use of my legs, everything changed. The respect and care that once surrounded me vanished overnight, replaced by schadenfreude and avoidance. Now when I see those same people smile, it all seems fake.

I shrugged. That’s normal. When someone falls from grace, previous kindness evaporates, and most people kick you while you’re down. Those who stand by you during hardship are truly rare.

Theodore turned to look at me. Like you. When everyone else was avoiding me, you accepted me.

I was momentarily taken aback, then laughed. I’m hardly being selfless. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement. I want your body and power, and you happen to be able to provide

both.

I moved closer to Theodore and crouched down to examine his legs. Let me check your

condition.

I suppose I should be grateful it was my legs that were damaged and not my face,Theodore joked.

I rolled up his pant legs to inspect the damage. Valid point.

Theodore laughed softly and began sharing his story. From him, I learned the reason for his paralysis. The Crimson family was large, with five siblings in his father’s generation. His father, Theron Crimson, was the youngest and least successful, often looked down upon by his siblings.

It wasn’t until Theodore grew up and displayed his exceptional Alpha powersfar surpassing his cousinsthat his father’s position in the family improved, earning the Alpha King’s favor.

I have a brother, Ronan, five years younger than me,” Theodore continued. Shortly after his birth, a seer told the Alpha King that Ronan would bring misfortune to the Crimson family. Despite my mother’s objections, the Alpha King sent him away. No one except the Alpha King and my father knew where.

Theodore’s expression darkened. My mother went searching for him and died in an accident. After I gained the Alpha King’s approval through my abilities, I requested that my brother be brought back. Three years ago, Ronan returned, along with Isla, a girl he had bonded with at the orphanage.

I treated Isla like my own sister. Last month, she was kidn*pped by rogue wolves who

demanded I come alone to rescue her.

I raised an eyebrow. You weren’t foolish enough to actually go alone, were you?

Theodore gave a bitter smile. I arranged for warriors to follow me secretly, but somehow the kidnappers knew about my plan. I was too focused on saving Isla to consider whether someone had leaked information. In the end, I went alone, perhaps too confident in my own strength.

The kidnappersweapons were enchanted with dark magic. Right here in this abandoned factory, about forty of them surrounded me and broke my legs. Marcus arrived with reinforcements just in time to save Isla and me.

I frowned, suspicious. It sounds like they were specifically targeting you. What did your investigation reveal?

I initially suspected someone close to me had betrayed me. But after a month of reflection, I discovered the mastermind behind it all might be my own brother, Ronan.

Let me guess,I said. He resented you. Why should you live in luxury while he grew up in an orphanage?

Theodore nodded. Perhaps he believes all his suffering was my fault.

He looked down at his useless legs with a sad smile. Should I take revenge on my own brother?

My wolf Ava whispered in my mind: Revenge only brings more pain, but some injuries truly need to be addressed.
