I stared at the message from the website editor, my lips curving into a smile. Instead of reviewing Helena’s list of entertainment companies, I typed a direct reply:

Helena, please arrange a small meeting at the end of the month. Invite all companies interested in purchasing the rights to my final healing chronicle. Make sure the company heads attend personallyI want to select my partner facetoface.

I leaned back in my chair, imagining Ethan’s expression when he discovered that the healing chronicles he desperately needed were mine. As the head of Starlight Entertainment, he couldn’t afford to miss this opportunity, especially with his current need to prove himself.

The thought of his shock when he realized the truth made me chuckle. This would be entertaining indeed.

Helena’s response came quickly: Of course, Lily. Your works have always been bestsellers, and this final chronicle is even more valuable. Are you working on any new healing records?

No plans for new works at the moment,” I replied.

I’ll arrange the meeting as soon as possible,” she wrote back before we exchanged a few pleasantries.

I shut down my computer and flopped back onto my bed, checking Theodore’s message from ten minutes ago. His simple text made me smile.

Perhaps if you reminded me every day, I’d never forget,” he’d written.

I typed back teasingly: So you need me to remind you to take your moonlight herb medicine every day? Sounds like you just want me to chat with you daily.

His reply came instantly: I won’t deny it.

Is this how you flirted with girls before?I asked, curious.

With my previous status, I never needed to flirt personally,he responded honestly.

I couldn’t help but laugh. Since we’re already arranged to be mated, there’s no need for flirting anymore.”

With you, I could flirt until the end of time,” came his smooth reply.

I frowned slightly, remembering Ethan’s words. Are you being nice to me just because you need me, like Ethan said?

Theodore’s response was immediate and firm: I’d like Ethan to repeat that to my face.

The next morning, I woke to find my phone back on my nightstand, courtesy of Green, my little snake. I checked my messages and saw Theodore had asked if we should start treatment early before tonight’s welcoming feast.

I quickly replied, suggesting we meet at The Whispering Glade at ten.

When I went downstairs for breakfast, I noticed Jaxon and Seraphina weren’t home. Agnes, our housekeeper, greeted me warmly.

Good morning, Miss Amelia. Alpha Jaxon and Lady Seraphina left early to check the banquet venue,” she explained, setting down a plate of venison sausages and eggs. They want everything perfect for your welcoming feast tonight.

They’re too kind,” I murmured, touched by their thoughtfulness.

Agnes lowered her voice. Miss, if you’re going out today, please take two guards with you. Alpha Jaxon insisted.

I nodded, though I had no intention of following that advice. I could protect myself perfectly

well.

After breakfast, I decided it was time to put my plan into action. I picked up my phone and

dialed Ethan’s number.

(Ethan’s POV)

I hadn’t slept all night. The pain in my right leg was a constant reminder that I was now crippled. How could I face my family? My pack? My future?

When Celine knocked on my door asking if I was going to the company today, I remained silent. I wasn’t ready to explain that my right leg was permanently damaged.

My phone showed fifteen missed calls from my assistant Zachary, but I couldn’t bring myself to respond.

When my phone rang with Amelia’s name on the screen, I froze. Despite my hatred for her, I couldn’t bring myself to hang up.

Hello, dear brother, her cheerful voice came through, dripping with false sweetness. Come find me. We’re going out. Theodore wants to confront you.

About what you saidthat he’s only being nice to me because he needs me to heal his legs,” she replied lightly. You’re just a pawn in our little love game, Ethan. How does that feel?

Rage boiled inside me, but I was powerless against her. Where should I meet you?

The east villa in thirty minutes,” she said before hanging up.

I struggled to my feet, wincing as pain shot through my right leg. Using the wall for support, I limped to my closet and dressed slowly.

When I finally made it downstairs, Celine and Mother were in the living room. Their eyes widened at my uneven gait.

Ethan, what happened to your leg?Mother asked, rushing toward me. Did Amelia do this to you?

I brushed past her coldly. I’ll explain when the time is right.

But-Celine began.

Not now,I snapped, making my way to the door.

The walk to the east villa was excruciating. Each step sent waves of pain through my damaged leg. When I finally arrived, I called Amelia.

I’m here,I said through gritted teeth.

Wait outside,she replied casually.

How long?I demanded.

Since when do I need to report to you?she countered before hanging up.

I leaned against a tree in the shade, the pain in my leg throbbing mercilessly. Thirty minutes

passed with no sign of her. My anger grew with each passing minute.

Finally, I saw her strolling toward me, taking her time, a smug smile on her face.

Are you deliberately humiliating me?I snarled when she reached me.

Amelia’s eyes glittered with malice. Can’t handle a little discomfort? How interesting. You all were so righteous when telling me to be generous about Celine taking my place. Because of that switch, the humiliation I suffered out there was far worse than this.
