Chapter 40: Damien’s Regret

Chapter 40: Damien’s Regret

(Theodore’s POV)

I noticed Amelia frowning in thought, her brow furrowed as she processed my analysis of her exmate. I couldn’t help but smile at her contemplative expression.

That’s just my personal guess,I said lightly. Regardless, you’ve already severed your mate bond. Now I’m your fiancé.

Amelia’s expression cleared, and she shook her head decisively. You’re right. There’s no point in analyzing Damien’s true motives for breaking our bond. He’s just a jerk, plain and simple.

Satisfaction bloomed in my chest hearing her dismiss her exmate so easily. I hadn’t been defending Damien with my analysisquite the opposite. I wanted to preemptively address any lingering feelings she might develop if she later discovered he still had feelings for her.

I wanted no competition for her heart. No rivals for her attention.

Shall we go have lunch?I suggested again, watching her face brighten at the mention of food.

Amelia patted her stomach and nodded eagerly. I’m starving after all that concentration.

She moved behind my wheelchair and began pushing me along the path. Her hands were small but steady, and I could feel the gentle care in how she navigated around the uneven

spots.

Marcus approached us, noticing our treatment session had concluded. Miss Stone, please allow me,he said respectfully, moving to take over the wheelchair. You should rest and have some refreshments after such intensive healing work.

He handed her a small bag of snacks and a bottle of water. I was pleased with his

attentiveness.

Thank you,” Amelia said, accepting the snacks with a bright smile.

She opened the bag and began munching on small cookies with obvious delight. The dappled sunlight filtered through the trees above us, casting golden patterns across her face. Her cheeks puffed slightly as she chewed, making her look both fierce and adorable simultaneously.

Something about this simple moment struck me as profoundly beautiful. It only strengthened my resolve to make her my mate, to protect this woman who could be both a formidable healer and adorably human in the span of a single breath.

I directed Marcus to a private kitchen nearby, one I reserved for special guests. The chef greeted us warmly, and soon we were seated at a table laden with freshly prepared dishes.

Amelia’s eyes widened at the spread. This looks amazing,” she said, immediately sampling a piece of venison.

I watched with satisfaction as she savored each bite. We can come here often if you’d like. The menu changes regularly, so you won’t get bored with the selection.

I’d love that, she nodded enthusiastically. We could make it our place for holidays and anniversaries.

Anniversaries?I asked, feigning ignorance though I knew exactly what she meant.

Amelia began counting on her fingers, her expression earnest. You know, like the anniversary of when we first met, our engagement day, and eventuallyshe paused, a slight blush coloring her cheeks, our marking ceremony.

I couldn’t help the smile that spread across my face. I’d like that very much.

Her phone rang againthe same unknown number as before. I recognized the tension that immediately appeared in her shoulders.

Would you like me to answer it?I offered. We could settle this once and for all.

After a moment’s hesitation, Amelia handed me her phone. I accepted the call and put it to

my ear.

I’m at the train station now. Where are you?Damien’s impatient voice came through

immediately.

Amelia is having lunch with me,I replied calmly. I’m Theodore Crimson, her fiancé. I’d appreciate it if you would stop pursuing her.

There was a shocked silence before Damien erupted. I don’t believe you! Put Amelia on the phone right now!

That won’t be necessary,” I said, maintaining my composure. We’ll send you an invitation to our marking ceremony. Until then, I suggest you respect her decision to move on.

I ended the call before he could respond and handed the phone back to Amelia.

It seems your exmate isn’t ready to give up,” I observed. My guess was correcthis feelings for you are genuine. When he became the Alpha heir, his suggestion to break your mate bond wasn’t about status or wealth. It was his misguided attempt to gain the upper hand in your relationship, to make you value him more.

I shook my head at the foolishness of his plan. Unfortunately for him, he miscalculated badly. Now, no matter how much he regrets it, it’s too late. You’re my fiancée now, and I won’t let anyone take you away from me.

(Amelia’s POV)

My phone rang again. Seeing Damien’s number, I decided it was time to settle this once and for all.

I should make things clear,I said to Theodore, who nodded in understanding.

I answered the call. Damien, stop calling me. We’ve severed our mate bond. It’s over.

There was a heavy silence before he spoke. His voice was different nowgone was the arrogant tone, replaced by something close to pleading.

I was wrong,he said quietly. I should never have joked about breaking our bond. I never actually wanted to end things with you.

I just felt like you didn’t care about me. I thought if I threatened to break our bond, you’d realize how much you’d miss me. I wanted you to see what you’d be losing.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. How old are you? What kind of childish game is that?

I know, I know,he said, his voice cracking. I was stupid. I thought maybe you’d stop treating me like some desperate suitor and actually fight for me for once.

I was stunned into momentary silence by the sound of tears in his voice. But my resolve

didn’t waver.

You’ve known me for two years, Damien,” I said coldly. You should understand my personality by now.

My wolf, Ava, growled within me: He lost his chance to be our mate.

Damien’s sobs became more pronounced. I was too clever for my own good. I overestimated myself. Please, give me one more chance.

His voice grew more desperate. It’s true that I’m the Alpha heir of the Blackwood Pack in Northgate City. Everything I said about breaking our bond and keeping you as a mistress was horrible, inexcusable. I’ll mark you properly, give you the life you deserve.
