The door to my office burst open as Caleb stormed in, his face twisted with anger. He threw himself onto the leather sofa across from my desk, not bothering with pleasantries.

“Katya’s situation is handled,” he announced, running a hand through his disheveled hair. “She’ll release a statement tonight taking full responsibility for the dress incident.”

I glanced up from the financial reports I’d been reviewing, noting the fury radiating from my younger brother. “Hmm,” I responded, returning my attention to the papers. “Make sure her compensation doesn’t come directly from your accounts. We can’t leave a paper trail.”

“I know that,” Caleb snapped, his fingers drumming impatiently against the armrest.

Setting down my pen, I leaned back in my chair. “What else is bothering you? You look ready to tear someone apart.”

Caleb’s eyes flashed dangerously. “That b***h Amelia! I actually felt bad about the dress incident last night. Spent hours writing her a heartfelt apology letter.” He laughed bitterly. “And what does she do this morning? Throws it away without even reading it, then goes online to publicly humiliate me over the dress!”

I raised an eyebrow, surprised by his naivety. “You actually apologized?”

“I thought it was the right thing to do!” Caleb slammed his fist against the sofa. “Our ‘dear sister‘ told Mother exactly why she came back to the Stone River Pack. She wants to destroy us completely–make us experience what it’s like to have nothing.” His lips curled into a sneer. “She’s overestimating herself.”

My expression darkened as I absorbed this information. Father’s warning from last night suddenly made more sense. This wasn’t just about Amelia reclaiming her position–she wanted revenge.

Initially, I’d only planned to cripple her legs as payback for my injured right leg. But if she was determined to be our enemy…why should I show any mercy?

“I’ve got people digging into her past,” Caleb continued, interrupting my thoughts. “She grew up among rogues–there must be dirt we can use against her. And if we can’t find any…” His smile turned cruel. “We’ll create some.”

I shrugged, feigning indifference. “Do whatever you want. I won’t interfere.”

Caleb’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. “You’re still not telling me what she has on you, are you? It must be serious if you’re letting her walk all over you.”

“Handle it however you see fit,” I repeated firmly, avoiding his question.

Before Caleb could press further, a knock sounded at the door. Without waiting for my response, my secretary Anya pushed it open, struggling to carry an armful of gardening tools.

“Sir, I’ve purchased everything you requested,” she announced, dumping the collection of trowels, spades, and pruning shears onto the corner table. “The specialty fertilizer will arrive tomorrow morning.”

I felt the blood drain from my face as Caleb’s eyes widened in disbelief.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I shouted at Anya. “Did I give you permission to enter?”

The secretary paled. “I–I knocked, sir.”

“Get out!” I snarled, watching her scurry from the room.

An uncomfortable silence fell as Caleb stared at the gardening tools, then back at me. His expression shifted from confusion to horrified realization.

“You’re helping Amelia with gardening?” he asked incredulously. “Please tell me I’m wrong.”

I couldn’t meet his eyes, my humiliation complete.

Caleb ran his hands through his hair. “What has happened to you, Ethan? The pack’s Alpha reduced to… a gardener’s assistant?”

After ensuring Anya was gone, I slammed my fist against the desk. “You don’t understand a damn thing! You think I want to be digging in dirt like some common Omega?”

“Then explain it to me!” Caleb demanded. “What could she possibly have on you that would make you sacrifice your dignity like this? Your leg is already injured because of her, and instead of retaliating, you’re following her orders like a trained puppy!”

The pain and frustration I’d been bottling up for days finally erupted. “I’ve been poisoned, alright?” I shouted, my voice breaking. “She poisoned me!”

Caleb’s jaw dropped. “What?”

I slumped back in my chair, suddenly exhausted. “It’s some kind of rare toxin. I’ve consulted every healer and herbalist I could find–none of them can identify it, let alone cure it.” My hands trembled slightly as I continued. “Only Amelia has the antidote, and she’s making me

“That heartless b***h,” Caleb whispered, his face pale with shock.

“Now you understand why I can’t fight back,” I said, my voice hollow. “I’m completely at her mercy.”

Caleb’s expression hardened with determination. “We should tell Patriarch Alaric immediately. He wouldn’t allow this!”

I laughed bitterly. “And what proof do I have? The poison doesn’t show up in any tests. It would just look like I’m trying to frame her.” I shook my head. “Grandfather already favors her -he’d never believe me without evidence.”

“This is my fault,” Caleb said, guilt washing over his features. “I’m the one who suggested you confront her. I never imagined she’d do something this vicious.”

“It doesn’t matter now,” I replied, forcing myself to think clearly. “What we need is a plan.”

I leaned forward, lowering my voice. “You need to start attending Valerius Kane’s auctions regularly. Look for information about a toxicologist named Morwenna that he mentioned. Meanwhile, I’ll hire a rogue skilled in stealth to search Amelia’s room for the antidote.”

Caleb’s eyes flashed dangerously. “Why not just force her to hand it over? We could-”

“No!” I cut him off sharply. “That’s exactly how I ended up in this situation. I underestimated her, and I still don’t even know when or how she poisoned me and my bodyguards.” I fixed him with a stern look. “Don’t make the same mistake. She’s more dangerous than she appears.”

Remembering my own helplessness as the poison took effect, I shuddered. “The last thing we need is for you to fall into her trap too.”

Caleb reluctantly nodded, seeing the wisdom in my caution.

I hesitated before adding one final request. “While you’re investigating, look into something else as well. Amelia claimed Celine hired people to harm her.” I frowned, still finding it hard to believe. “I don’t think Celine would do something that reckless, but we should confirm it anyway.”
