Chapter 88: Shadow King

Chapter 88: Shadow King

(Author’s POV)

The interior of the luxury vehicle was wrapped in a suffocating silence, the kind that precedes

a violent storm. Then, a burst of static cleared, and Silas’s voice cut through the air, cool, crisp, and utterly devoid of emotion, echoing from the car’s speakers.

I’ve locked onto Caleb’s realtime location, Miss Stone. The tracking signal has been synchronized to your phone. The prey is moving fast, but he cannot outrun the net we’ve

cast.

Amelia reached out, her slender fingers tapping the screen to end the call before securing the phone onto the dashboard mount. The screen illuminated the dim cabin with a harsh, artificial glow. On the digital map, a solitary red dot pulsed rhythmically, moving with frantic speed along the highway artery. It was Caleb.

A slow, terrifying transformation took over Amelia’s delicate features. Her lips curled upward, not in a smile of joy, but into a chilling, icy arc that didn’t reach her eyes. Those eyes, usually so clear, now held a predatory gleam, shimmering with a dangerous light that danced between madness and absolute control. She knew. She felt the subtle, sickening slack in the brake pedal beneath her foot. The sabotage was clumsy, desperatea trap set by a coward. And there was no doubt in her mind that Caleb was the architect of this potential tragedy.

Since he desires an accident so badly, she murmured, her voice a velvet whisper laced with arsenic, I suppose it would be rude not to give him exactly what he asked for.

She turned her head slightly, her gaze locking onto Theodore in the passenger seat. The city lights streaked across his face, illuminating the sharp angles of his jaw and the profound depth of his eyes.

Hold on tight, Theodore, she warned softly, her hands gripping the leather steering wheel until her knuckles turned white. We’re about to go very fast. The brakes are gone, so the only

way out is through.

Theodore didn’t flinch. He didn’t gasp or clutch the handle in panic. Instead, he sat with an ethereal stillness, his handsome eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made the world outside the windows fade away. There was no fear in his gaze, only an unshakable, almost devout trust.

Do whatever you must, Amelia,he replied, his voice steady, anchoring her wild energy. Whatever happens, I will not be a burden to you. If we burn, we burn together.”

Deep within Amelia’s consciousness, a primal force awakened. Ava, the wolf, shook out her massive fur and let out a howl that reverberated through Amelia’s very soul, a sound of pure, unadulterated battle lust. *The hunt begins! Let the coward feel the terror of the chase! Let him understand what it means to be bitten back by the prey he thought was weak!*

Amelia mentally acknowledged Ava’s ferocious spirit, feeling her own blood heat up in response. She didn’t touch the useless brake. Instead, she slammed her foot down hard on the accelerator. The white Porsche roareda mechanical beast screaming its challengeand shot out of the parking lot like a silver bullet fired from a silencer, tearing into the night.

Meanwhile, in the damp, shadowy depths of the Moonlight Haven underground parking garage, the air was thick with the smell of exhaust and impending doom. The bodyguard who had tampered with the brakes and reported to Caleb was whistling a low tune, preparing to slip away into the anonymity of the night. He reached for his ignition, imagining the bonus he would receive for a job well done.

Suddenly, the world exploded.

A deafening crash shattered the silence as the driver’s side window disintegrated. Thousands of shards of tempered glass erupted inward, flying like diamond dust in the dim light.

The bodyguard turned, his heart hammering against his ribs, terror seizing his throat. But before his brain could even process the intrusion, a shadow had materialized beside his door. Silas moved with a speed that defied human limitations, a blur of lethal intent.

She didn’t speak. She simply reached through the jagged remains of the window, her hand clamping onto the man’s collar with the force of a hydraulic press. With a fluid, violent motion, she yanked him forward and smashed his head against the remaining shards of glass on the window frame.

*Crunch.*

Once.

*Smash.*

Twice.

She didn’t stop until the man slumped heavily in his seat, his resistance extinguished, his face a mask of crimson blood and defeat.

Silas’s expression remained terrifyingly blank, as if she were merely taking out the trash rather than brutalizing a human being. She wrenched the car door open, the metal groaning

in protest, and dragged the limp body out onto the concrete floor. She kicked him aside, her boot connecting with his ribs, treating him with the disdain one reserves for garbage.

Since you were so eager to sign your own death warrant, I’ll grant your wish,” she said, her voice colder than the grave. She looked down at the groaning, semiconscious man. Daring to touch the Boss’s car? You don’t have enough lives in this world to pay for that insolence.

From the shadows of the garage, several figures emergeddisguised rogue warriors, silent and imposing. Silas turned to them, wiping a speck of dust from her immaculate sleeve.

Disable his hands so he never touches a car again, she commanded ruthlessly, turning her back on the scene. Then throw him in the alley behind the district. Let the rats have their feast.

Miles away,

the highway stretched out like a ribbon of darkness, punctuated by the blur of streetlights. Caleb was speeding in his Ferrari, the engine’s highpitched whine vibrating through his bones. Adrenaline surged through his veins, a potent cocktail of malice and excitement. He blew through another red light, laughing as the horns of other cars faded behind him.

He had just received the text message: *The target has taken the bait. The car is on the road.*

His heart swelled with a twisted, sick anticipation. In his mind’s eye, he painted a gruesome masterpieceAmelia’s car losing control on a curve, the screech of tires, the sickening crunch of metal, and finally, her broken body lying amidst the wreckage, covered in blood.

The plan was exquisite. Once the inevitable crash occurred, he would circle back. He would be the first on the scene, the devastatingly handsome, concerned cousin. He would pull her from the flames, playing the hero for the cameras and, more importantly, for Patriarch Alaric. Not only would it cement his image as a devoted family member, but if she survived, she would owe him her life. A debt she could never repay.

Basking in the thrill of his own genius, he dialed Celine. Get ready,he boasted, his voice dripping with arrogance. A surprise is coming. The obstacle is about to be removed.

He hung up, feeling invincible. His eyes drifted casually to the GPS mount on his dashboard to check his distance from the accident site.

The smirk froze on his face. The blood drained from his cheeks.

The screen showed the red dot representing Amelia. But it wasn’t stationary. It wasn’t crashed. It was behind him. And it was closing the distance at a velocity that shouldn’t have been possible for a car with broken brakes.

Caleb blinked, thinking it was a glitch. He looked at his speedometerhe was already pushing 100 miles per hour. Yet, the dot was gaining on him, eating up the miles with terrifying aggression.

Has she gone mad?he muttered, his voice cracking. Oris she coming for me?

A flash of genuine panic pierced his narcissism. For a second, he felt like a prey animal realizing the predator has been toying with him all along. But he quickly shook his head, forcing a jagged laugh.

Claim

No. That was impossible. She must have discovered the brake failure. She was panicking. Stupid woman. She probably confused the accelerator for the brake in her hysteria, stomping on the gas in a desperate attempt to stop, only to send herself hurtling toward doom.

With that thought, his lips curled back into a cruel sneer. At this speed, a collision wouldn’t just be an accident; it would be an obliteration. Even if she had that beast of a wolf, physics was physics. An impact at 120 miles per hour would reduce her to atoms.

Originally, he had only intended to cripple herto leave her broken and pathetic like that useless mate of hers, Theodore. A pair of tragic cripples for him to pity publicly. He hadn’t explicitly planned to kill her today.

But now? Looking at the relentless red dot closing in, Caleb felt a surge of dark acceptance. If she wanted to die this badly, who was he to stop her? There would be no evidence. No traces on the car would point to him after an explosion of that magnitude.

Caleb took a deep breath, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. He gritted his teeth, eyes manic and wide, and slammed his foot down.

Fine,he hissed at the rearview mirror. “Let’s see who burns first. He surrendered to the speed, leaving everything to a fate he foolishly thought he controlled.
