I glanced at the phone screen, watching the name flash insistently. “Is that Celine calling?”

Rhys looked surprised at my accuracy. “How did you know?”

“Just a guess.” I smiled innocently. “Actually, I should confess something. I deliberately told Celine about your real identity.”

Rhys stared at me for a moment, then let out a bitter laugh. “You’re deliberately making trouble for me, aren’t you?”

“Hey, that’s not fair,” I protested. “Remember when Ethan wanted to contact me through you? You agreed to help him. I even showed up as ‘Lily‘ for that meeting.”

“That was different.”

“The process had some bumps, but this counts as you paying back that favor.” I grinned. “Besides, you’ll thank me later.”

Rhys shook his head, still smiling despite himself. “You’re impossible.”

The phone continued buzzing. Rhys glanced at it again, then at me. “Should I answer?”

“Absolutely. Put it on speaker too.”

He raised an eyebrow but did as I suggested. “This should be interesting.”

The call connected, and Celine’s sweet, gentle voice filled the room. “Rhys! Oh, thank goodness you picked up.”

Her tone was sickeningly sweet, dripping with false intimacy.

Rhys’s voice turned cold and sarcastic. “Yesterday you believed Caleb’s lies. You were convinced that Amelia and I were conspiring to deceive everyone.”

“I’m so sorry about that,” Celine said quickly. “I should have stopped Caleb. It was my fault for not speaking up.”

Rhys let out a harsh laugh. “You always blame someone else, don’t you?”

Celine fell silent again.

“You’re not apologizing because you’re sorry,” Rhys said. “You’re apologizing because you found out I’m the Calder Pack heir.”

His voice grew colder. “I won’t have any more contact with you. We’re done.”

Without another word, he hung up.

I clapped slowly. “Wow. That was brutal.”

“Sometimes you have to be ruthless,” Rhys said seriously.

Then he paused, studying my face. “Wait. You didn’t tell Celine my identity just to make her regret her choices, did you?”

“Smart man.” I smiled. “My real target is Adrian.”

Rhys’s eyes lit up with understanding. “Stone River Botanicals.”

“Exactly. Adrian has been trying to partner with the Calder Pack for years. Your family controls the most advanced herbal cultivation technology in the territory.”

I set down my fruit bowl. “Now Adrian knows the partnership opportunity was right there, but his precious adopted daughter ruined it. He must be furious.”

Rhys laughed coldly. “Celine is probably panicking right now. She might even take her frustration out on poor unconscious Caleb.”

We talked for another hour about business strategies and old memories from Meadow Brook. The conversation felt natural and comfortable, like the old days when we were just two friends sharing dreams.

As evening approached, the setting sun painted the hospital windows red. A gentle knock interrupted our conversation.

“I’ve called Adrian and Livia,” he announced. “They should be here shortly.”

Rhys squeezed my hand supportively. “Do you want me to stay?”

“Is it true?” she demanded loudly. “Did you find proof that my son is innocent?”

Livia stepped closer to my bed, her voice rising. “When you realize your mistake, I want her handed over to us for proper punishment!”
