Chapter 145
Talia’s POV
I watch Imema’s face as she speaks, her words dripping with false concern. “Jack is old, and Robin is a kid. Even if you do not care about yourself, you should at least think about them, shouldn’t you?”
As always, she hits her mark. A few words, carefully placed, and suddenly the blame for Nick’s tantrum shifts squarely onto my shoulders. She makes it sound like I provoked him, like I am the one who put everyone in danger.
But Jack is not the type to fall for her act. He lets out a loud, disdainful snort that cuts through her performance like a blade.
“Good for nothing when it comes to real work, but when it is time to yap, you are number one.”
He fixes her with a withering stare. “Instead of running your mouth, why do you not actually do something useful? Here is your task for today.”

Her eyes widen in disbelief. She stares at the bags like they might attack her.
“Why… why is there so much?” She glances over at Robin’s station. “He only has three bags! Why do I have to do six? This is not fair!”
Jack does not miss a beat. “Unbelievable. A grown woman whining about fairness like a five–year–old.” He shakes his head slowly. “Have you no shame?”
Imema’s brows knit together in frustration. A flush creeps up her neck. “Are you deliberately trying to make things hard for me, Jack?”
Robin chimes in helpfully. His voice is bright, innocent. “Ms. Volkov, he is not being unfair. On the first day, we were supposed to sort three bags of herbs each, but you only finished half a bag. So today, you are just catching up on what you did not finish, plus the three bags for today. That makes six.” He looks up at her with wide, earnest eyes. “It is only fair, isn’t it?”
Imema bites her lip, her irritation barely contained. Her fingers twitch at her sides.

I can handle that much work. Besides…” She hesitates, letting the words hang. “I have to start preparing for my concert soon. If I hurt my hands, Alpha will be furious.”
I glance at her, unimpressed. Without a word, I pull out my phone and start dialing.
Imema watches me, confusion flickering across her face. She has not yet figured out what I am doing when the call on the other end suddenly connects.
Aires’s voice comes through, brisk and distracted. “Talia?”
I keep my voice calm but firm. “Ms. Volkov says she is preparing for a concert and is worried about injuring her hands, which might upset you. She is refusing to sort the herbs.” I pause, letting that settle. “Jack does not keep freeloaders around, so perhaps you should come pick her
up.”
A long silence stretches on the other end. I can almost hear him weighing options, calculating. Finally, his voice returns, clipped and decisive.
“Put Imema on the phone.”

phone to her ear.
“Alpha,” she whimpers, her voice small and wounded. “I am just scared that if I hurt my hands, it will affect my piano playing… You know how it is for pianists like us… we even buy insurance for our hands.”
Aires’s voice is calm, measured. There is no warmth in it, no indulgence. “I will have someone send over a few pairs of custom gloves. They will protect your hands, so there is no need to worry.”
Imema freezes. Her mouth opens, but no words come out. The tears that were forming now seem trapped, uncertain whether to fall.
After a moment of quiet, Aires adds, “I have a meeting soon. If there is nothing else, I will hang up now.”
The line goes dead.
Imema stares at the phone in her hand, her expression a mixture of disbelief and wounded pride. She slowly hands it back to me, and I see the calculation behind her eyes. She is regrouping. Reassessing.

Half an hour later, someone arrives with four pairs of

tasks like sorting herbs. The leather is thin but tough, the stitching impeccable. There is even a child–sized pair for Robin.
Jack slips on one of the gloves, flexing his fingers with a satisfied grin that splits his face. He wiggles each digit, testing the fit.
/
“Well, would you look at that.” He turns his hand over, admiring the craftsmanship. “These things are light, tough, and fit like a dream. You could sort herbs all day with these and not feel a thing.” He glances at Imema, his grin widening. “If I had known Aires could pull this off, I would have given Imema double the work!”
Imema nearly explodes. Her face flushes, her hands clench into fists at her sides. But the gloves are here. Aires is not coming to rescue her. She has no excuse left.
She reluctantly picks up her share of herbs and begins. sorting, her movements stiff and resentful. I watch her for a moment, then turn back to my own work.
She has agreed to come here at Aires’s request, but I know she is not about to just stay quietly and play along.

Imema clutches her head dramatically, swaying on her feet like a willow in the wind. Her eyes flutter, her body listing to one side.
“Oh… my head…” Her voice is weak, breathless. “I feel so dizzy… I think I am going to faint…”
I watch her from the corner of my eye, a cold smile curving my lips. She expects us to fuss, panic, to beg her to sit down and rest.
I pull out my phone and dial 911.
Her swaying stops for just a fraction of a second. Then she continues, committed now to her performance.
Minutes later, an ambulance arrives. The paramedics rush in, their movements efficient and practiced. Imema is whisked away on a stretcher, her hand pressed dramatically to her forehead.

At the hospital, Aires arrives rubbing his temples. Exhaustion etches lines into his face that were not there
before. He looks like a man who has been pulled in to04:15 many directions for too long.

“What is wrong with her this time?” His voice is flat.
I keep my expression neutral, my tone matter–of–fact. “Ms. Volkov suddenly claimed she was dizzy and said she might not make it. I had no choice but to call 911. We could not risk being held responsible if something serious happened to her.”
An hour later, Imema is wheeled out of the examination room. She looks pale, whether from genuine exhaustion or performance I cannot tell.
The doctor approaches with a grim expression. He holds a clipboard against his chest, his face set in that particular look doctors use when delivering serious news.
“Ms. Volkov’s condition is not looking good. She needs to avoid overexertion and focus on rest.”
Before anyone can respond, Jack cuts in abruptly. His voice drips with sarcasm, sharp as broken glass.
“Tell me.” He fixes the doctor with a hard stare. “Can you actually cure her?”
The doctor blinks, startled by the sharpness of the 14:15 question. He fumbles for a moment, adjusting his glasses.

manage her symptoms and slow the progression, but…”
Jack does not let him finish. He scoffs loudly, interrupting with no trace of politeness.
“If you cannot cure her, then why are you running your/ mouth like you can?” His voice rises, filling the corridor. “It is doctors like you who ruin lives. How many patients who could have been treated were left to suffer because of incompetence like this?”
