I lift my head and look at Aires again, keeping my expression perfectly neutral. “Jack needs time to prepare the medication. Do you really think life-saving medicine is that easy to make? If it were so simple, you would not have spent all this time searching for top doctors and still get nothing.”

My voice sounds convincing. Every word is a calculated lie, but I have learned from the best.

“And besides,” I continue, letting a note of practicality enter my tone, “Ms. Volkov needs to stay with Jack for a few more days. She has already lost time because of her fainting spells and hospital visits. Those delays need to be made up for. If I hand over all the medicine now, and she decides not to come back the next day, Jack will not provide any of the follow-up treatments she will need.”

For a moment, it seems like my argument makes sense. Both Nick and Aires, each harboring their own agendas, stay silent. They do not question me or push back. 1/7

want. Every day, I spend time grinding herbs and preparing medicines. Imema thinks this is just part of the work Jack has assigned to me. She has no idea those herbs are supposed to be her life-saving medicine.

Jack calls me over to help, but not to waste his time. on someone who is faking an illness. I have studied traditional medicine under him for a while, so the responsibility for planning the dosage, the treatment schedule, everything, naturally falls to me.

As I prepare the medication, I finally understand why Jack despises people who pretend to be sick. The process of making medicine by hand is incredibly tedious. It keeps me ridiculously busy.

So I call Electra over to help.

When Electra finds out I am making Imema’s so-called life-saving medicine, she cannot resist getting involved. In true Electra fashion, she decides to be as wicked as possible. She uses her foot-washing water to brew the herbal concoction. She even spits into it a few times for good measure.

I smirk to myself and add a few cockroaches to the mix. I crush everything together and shape the final product into pills. The ingredients are all common herbs, completely harmless but utterly useless for treating any real illness.

I look at Aires and Nick, my voice casual. “By the way, Jack has already prepared the first round of actual medication. Ms. Volkov can start taking it now.”

I pause, letting that sink in. “I am heading to the clinic in a little while. Do you two want to come with me and check it out?”

Nick’s eyes light up. He is probably eager to share the news of our impending divorce with Imema. He agrees immediately, his scarred face splitting into a grin.

Aires hesitates for a few seconds. His eyes search my face, but I have learned to give him nothing.

Finally, he gives a nod.

Neither Talia nor Robin has shown up today. Robin is at school, and Talia has gone with Aires to sort out the cooling-off period for their divorce filing.

Nick promised to check on things at the courthouse for me, but he still has not texted me back.

I cannot stop wondering. Have Talia and Aires officially filed for divorce yet?

Just as my patience wears thin, three familiar figures walk into the clinic.

My eyes light up. I drop the herbs I am holding and run over to them, my feet carrying me before I can think.

“Alpha!” My voice comes out bright, eager. “What are you doing here? Do you not have work today?”

I don’t even bother to glance at Talia and Nick standing right next to him. Talia does not care. She is used to it by now. But Nick? I can feel his sour mood radiating off him.

Nick clears his throat loudly. “Imema, I have only been out of the hospital for a few days, and you do not even ask how I am doing? Is Alpha really the only person you careg

about?”

something warm and apologetic. “Of course not!” I give him my brightest smile, letting my voice go soft and, sweet. “I just wanted to say hi to Alpha first, that is all.”

I let my tone soften further, leaning in slightly. “Nick, you have always been so good to me. If I had not been so busy, I definitely would have gone to the hospital to take care of you myself.”

Nick’s irritation melts away instantly. A goofy grin spreads across his scarred face. “Really?”

I look at him seriously, my eyes wide and earnest. “When have I ever lied to you?”

His grin widens, and I know I have him wrapped around my finger again. So easy. Always so easy.

I pause for a moment, then glance subtly at Talia, making it look accidental. “Ms. Perseus, did you just happen to run into Alpha and Nick at the door? What a

coincidence.”

Talia raises an eyebrow. Her expression is calm, almost amused. “Not a coincidence. We just came back from the courthouse together.”

Talia’s lips curl into a subtle smile.

“What, they did not tell you? Aires has been bending over backward to help you get better. He is even filing for divorce because of you. Honestly, I would not be surprised if he would risk his life for you without a second thought.”

I open my mouth to respond, but Aires cuts in, his voice sharp. “That is enough.” He frowns at Talia. “Did you not say you were going to get Imema’s medication?”

“Of course. I will go grab it now.”

She disappears into the back room. I watch her go, my

mind racing. Divorce! They really filed for divorce

A few minutes later, Talia returns with a small medicine bottle and a bottle of water. She hands the water to me, then carefully takes out one of the pills herself.

I don’t know what is in that pill, and I don’t trust Talia. I don’t trust her at all.

Before I can say anything, Nick speaks up. For once, his brain seems to be working.

“Talia, you said this is a life-saving drug, right?” His voice is suspicious, his scarred face scrunched up. “But what if it is poison? What if it messes Imema up?”

I hold my breath, waiting for Talia’s answer. My hand hovers, not yet reaching for the pill.
