Chapter 150
Imema’s POV
I watch Talia pull the pill back, a cold smirk playing at her lips. Something about that expression makes my stomach tighten.
“Really?” Talia’s voice drips with disdain. “Are we still in the medieval ages, playing the ‘test for poison’ game? This is a lawful society. Poisoning people is illegal. Do you seriously think I am going to poison her right in front of
you?”
She holds the pill up between her fingers, examining it like it is nothing more than a curiosity. “If something happens, the hospital will catch it, and I will not exactly be able to run away, will I? If you do not trust me, go ahead and take the pill to a lab for testing.”
Her eyes flick to Nick, sharp and cutting. “Do you think I am Imema’s maid? Here to let you test poison on her? Who exactly are you insulting? If your doubts mess with Ms. Volkov’ treatment, that is on you. Not us.”
Nick’s face goes red beneath his scars. He looks like a12:59

Aires’s patience looks thin. I see it in the way his jaw tightens, the way his eyes narrow. Nick has a talent for starting trouble without any sense of how to get out of it. I know Aires usually lets Nick handle his own messes. But I am involved now, so he has no choice but to step in.
“Nick was just joking.” Aires’s voice is flat, dismissive.
Talia’s head snaps toward him. “Joking?” Her voice rises. “Is that really a joke?”
She turns back to face us fully, her posture rigid. “A life-saving drug should not be taken lightly by someone who is not even sick. You know the saying, ‘medicine is poison by nature.’ Mr. Perseus, I am sure you understand that. If you do not trust us, maybe it is time you found someone else. You have already gotten the release letter, and you have not paid the billion, so there is no harm in it for you.”
She pauses, and something shifts in her expression. A realization. “Ah, now I understand.” Her voice turns soft, almost pitying. “The whole thing about treating Ms. Volkov was just a cover to get my release letter, wasn’t
it?”

now it is clear.” She shakes her head slowly. “She is not that important after all. Your friendship does not seem to be stronger than your bond as brothers.”
I know what she is doing. She is trying to drive a wedge between them. She is trying to make me doubt. And yet, her words settle into my chest like stones.
I understand the truth. Aires only tolerates Nick because Nick saved his life. It is debt, not friendship. Not really.
Lately, Aires’s attitude toward me has shifted. He is colder. More distant. He does not answer my calls the way he used to. When he looks at me, there is something in his eyes I do not recognize. I catch myself overthinking everything, replaying every conversation, every glance, every moment of silence.
Now Talia’s words echo in my head, and I cannot stop wondering. Has Aires always been this accommodating because of Nick? Or is it that Nick is the one calling him every time, and he simply cannot refuse?
I look at Aires, who is standing there grimly, without needing to assure me that I matter, that I am important.

I can see Aires’s patience wearing thin. He knows exactly what I’m doing, and he doesn’t like it. His frown deepens his voice low and sharp. “Cut the crap.”
I just smile and stop pushing.
It was a harmless remark, but judging by Imema’s face, she really bought it. The fun of stirring things up is more satisfying than I expected.
Aires is not one for long explanations, and turns to Nick. “Apologize to Talia.”
Nick’s frustration is written all over his scarred face. But
he is more concerned about Imema’s condition than his pride, so he reluctantly speaks up. “Talia, I was just joking around…” He trails off, his voice sullen. “Why are you being so touchy?”
I do not care about his half-hearted apology anyway. “You do not want to apologize? Fine. But since you two are so close, how about you test the medicine for Ms. Volkov, then?”
Nick raises an eyebrow, a flicker of suspicion crossing his face. “You said ‘medicine is poison,’ right? I am not sick:59

treatment is mild, with some detoxifying ingredients. It will not hurt your face… Mmm, actually it might even be good for it.”
I shake the pill bottle, letting the contents rattle. “This medicine’s ingredients are rare and precious, worth a fortune. There are only a few pills, and it took seven whole days to make them, with all sorts of complicated
processes.”
Nick stares at me, his skepticism wavering. “Really? That amazing?”
I smirk. “Come on, think about it. It can cure Ms. Volkov’ terminal illness, wouldn’t it have some magical properties?”
Nick hesitates, but he takes the pill from my hand. He turns it over, examining it like it might bite him. Then, just as he is about to swallow it, he stops and glares at me. “If this messes me up, you are going to regret it.”
I smile sweetly, my voice light. “If anything goes wrong, you can always come find me.”

Nick, seeing my confidence, swallows the pill in one go.
When nothing happens after an hour, his shoulders relax, the tension draining from his face.
He turns to Imema. “It should be fine. Imema, go ahead and take it now. The sooner we start treatment, the sooner you will get better.”
Imema stares at the dark pill in my hand. Her reluctance is obvious, written in the way her fingers hesitate, the way her eyes dart between the pill and my face. But if she refuses, it will look too obvious.
She steels herself, takes a sip of water, and swallows the pill.
I smile quietly to myself. I will have to think carefully about the second round of treatment.
Once they are finished, I collect the remaining pills, slipping them back into the bottle.
Nick’s voice cuts through the silence. “Talia, didn’t you say we could start with one course for Imema? Why are you taking the pills away now? How is she supposed to:59
get treated?”

I keep my tone cool. “Ms. Volkov has to take her medicine every three days, but she must come here for treatment within the next month. The first course is crucial. If Ms. Volkov skips a dose or secretly dumps it, won’t you blame the medicine for not working?”
Nick frowns, his brow furrowing. “How could that happen?! This is a life-saving drug for Imema. She would never skip it or throw it away.”
