Chapter 208
Aeson’s POV
I watch Robin pack his things. He moves slowly, carefully, like he’s got all the time in the world. Nobody’s talking to him, nobody is looking at him and he doesn’t even seem to care?
“Robin.” I walk over to his desk. “Don’t you feel sad? Everyone’s
ignoring you.”
He doesn’t even look up. “No, I don’t. I’m here to learn, not to
make friends.”
He swings his bag over his shoulder and walks out of the classroom. I follow him. I can’t believe him. He’s got to be pretending.
“Robin, stop pretending!” I walk faster to catch up. “You’ve got to be scared. You’ve got to be upset.”
He stops and turns around. His face is calm. Too calm.
“So what if they’re ignoring me?” He shrugs. “They’re not my people. Why should I be upset over people who don’t care about
me?”
I open my mouth, but nothing comes out.

There’s nobody else in the hallway. No teachers. No kids. Robin isn’t pretending anymore. I can see it in the way he stands, the way his shoulders drop.
“Aeson, I should actually thank you.” He tilts his head. “You did me a favor. I like it this way. I can focus on doing what I like, and now nobody’s bothering me.”
I blink. “Thank me? What do I have to do with this?”
Robin rolls his eyes again. “You always say I’m pretending, but you’re doing a pretty good job of it yourself.”
I’ve got no idea what he’s talking about. “What are you talking about?” My voice comes out sharper than I mean it to. “What am I pretending?”
“Isn’t your dad telling all the teachers and kids at school to ignore me?”
“That’s a lie!” I step forward. “I didn’t ask my dad to do any of that.”
I think Robin’s situation is kind of funny, but I never asked Aires to isolate him. I don’t want adults messing with kid stuff. That’s not how things should work.
“Now, every kid at school knows about this.” Robin picks at his fingernail, casual. “If you don’t believe me, ask any teacher.” 5:20

that. He’s busy. He doesn’t care about school gossip.
That afternoon, Robin stays in the classroom a little longer to finish his homework. I wait for him on purpose. I want to see if he cracks when nobody’s watching.
By the time we leave school, most kids have already gone home. The courtyard is almost empty.
“Hey, isn’t that Aeson?”
I freeze.
Three boys walk toward me. The one in the front is huge. He’s only six years old, but he’s as big as an eight or nine–year–old. Too many sweets. Too much fried food. I know him.
My stomach drops.
These are the kids who bullied me at my old school. Every day, they laughed at me. Every day, they made fun of me for having an embarrassing mom. I tried to fight them once, but I lost. After that, they only got meaner. They got other kids to join in.
Of all the people I didn’t want to run into again, it’s these three.
And now they’re here.
It’s really you!” The big one grins. “So you transferred here!:20

My chest feels tight, My hands feel cold.
The boy’s name is Gavin Christoph, and I feel a cold ticklish sensation shake my whole body as his small, beady eyes stare at my face.
Gavin’s POV
I’ve never liked Aeson.
My mom, Lily, compares me to him all the time. Every single day. If I get a math problem wrong, she says, “Look at Aeson. He always gets perfect scores. Look at you. You can’t even get simple math right. How did I end up with such a dumb kid?”
If I want to play outside, she says, “All you ever do is eat! You’re just like your dad, always running around with women. At least your dad can run a company. But you? Why didn’t you inherit any of his brains?”
If I struggle with my languages, she says, “Aeson can speak three languages, and you can’t even manage English!”
If I try to show her something I made, she says, “Aeson likes to solve Rubik’s cubes for fun. And you? You’re still playing in the dirt.”
At first, I envied Aeson. I wished I was as smart as him. I wished mom looked at me the way she looked at his name on the 5:20

hotter. I started to hate him. If it weren’t for Aeson, my mom wouldn’t have anyone to compare me to.
Then Aeson transferred to a different school. I was so happy. Finally. No more comparisons. No more hearing his name at the dinner table.
But then my mom found out where he went. She learned that the students at his new school had to pass a foreign language exam. So she hired a tutor for me. Every day, I’ve got to study. Every night, she drills me on vocabulary until I can barely keep my eyes open. If I get a word wrong, I’m not allowed to sleep.
I hate Aeson even more now.
I swore that once I got into this school, I would make him pay. I teamed up with two other boys who don’t like him either. We planned everything. We’re going to make sure he never feels safe
here.
If we succeed, my mom won’t have any reason to compare us anymore. She’ll have to look at me. Just me.
I stand in front of Aeson, blocking his path. The other two boys move to the sides. Aeson’s trapped.
“Long time no see, Aeson.” Gavin crosses his arms. “Miss me?”
Arson doesn’t answer. His face is pale.
