On the drive home, I ask Aeson in detail about what happened on his birthday. The pieces begin to fall into place, each one more damning than the last.

Aeson tells me he was on the second floor. He saw everything. Nick’s friends gathered around Talia like wolves circling prey. He watched them trip her, watched her stumble and fall, watched the drinks spill and the laughter erupt. He heard the cruel jokes, the mocking whispers, the way no one stepped forward to help her.

He ran straight to Diana. He told her what happened, expecting justice, expecting someone to defend his mother. Instead, Diana blamed Talia. She said Talia embarrassed the Perseus family at the party. She scolded her harshly, right there in front of everyone, and told her to never cause such a

scene again.

When I found out, I did nothing. I reprimanded Nick briefly, a few words of mild disapproval, and let the matter drop. I did not punish anyone. I did not demand apologies. I did not stand up for my wife.

Aeson saw his mother biting her lower lip, trying to hold back tears, humiliated in front of strangers who laughed at her pain. At that moment, he felt truly sorry for her. He wanted to comfort her, to wrap his arms around her and tell her everything would be okay. But the mocking gazes around him felt like needles pricking his skin, and he stood there frozen, not knowing what to do.

No one told him the answer. No one showed him how to be

brave.

Diana’s disdainful voice snaps Aeson out of his thoughts. We are back at the manor now, standing in the grand living room with its high ceilings and cold marble floors.

“So what if it was intentional or not?” Diana’s voice is sharp, dismissive. “Are you going to stand up for Talia now? Those are your dear friends, are they not?” She crosses her arms. “If you truly cared about Talia, would Nick’s friends dare to bully

her?”

She does not stop. Her words keep coming, relentless.

“Look at Nick himself. When has he ever met Talia without sneering at her? Without making some cutting remark about

She shakes her head. “Even children at the kindergarten mock Talia. They laugh at her because their parents laugh at her. Is that not your failure too?”

I open my mouth, but she cuts me off.

“If you had not spent all your time flaunting your love with Imema, making sure everyone in this city knew your wife was neglected, who would have dared to say a word against Talia?” Her eyes are cold. “You failed as a husband, and now you are trying to blame me?” She sniffs. “I am not taking the

fall for this.”

She goes on and on, each word a lash, until I am left speechless.

I stand there, staring at the floor, and I begin to doubt. Have I really been neglecting Talia all this time? Have I been so blind, so consumed with Imema and Nick and business, that I did not see what was happening right in front of me?

The answer sits heavy in my chest, unwelcome and

undeniable.

The next morning, I wake up to chaos.

A scandal involving my group of troublemaking friends explodes across the internet. The video is everywhere. Trending on every platform. People are sharing it like

wildfire.

My phone rings before I have even finished my coffee. Nick.

By now, I know that it is never good news whenever Nick calls. My irritation flares. I glance at the news headlines, at the angry faces of the victims, at the smug grin of that drunk

driver.

“I see.” My voice is cold. Unreadable.

I think about the timing. The video surfaces the morning after Talia threatened to expose them. The morning after she told Raymond she had evidence. This is not a coincidence. This is her. She is following through.

I rub my temples. My irritation bleeds into my voice, icy and

sharp.

“Take down the trending topic?” I repeat. “So you want me to publicly admit that the Perseus Group and I are backing your so–called best friends? You want everyone to curse us

instead?”

Nick freezes. I can hear him breathing on the other end of

the line.

I remain indifferent. “If you do not want their mess to drag us down, we cannot take it down. In fact, we need to issue

a statement immediately. Publicly distance ourselves from

them.”

Nick catches on right away. Relief floods his voice. “Got it. I will get someone on it now.”

He hangs up. I stare at my phone for a long moment, then look out the window at the city below.

Talia is not the woman I married anymore. She is something else, something dangerous. And for the first time, I am not

sure I can stop her.
