“Did you not call the police?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.

I clench my fists. My mother meant well. She always meant well. But she did not understand that some problems cannot be solved with money. Some wounds do not heal with checks.

“So many years have passed.” I lean back in my chair. “How gone they suddenly reappeared and found Rafael?”
