Chapter 207

I stared at him, trying to understand his angle, my eyes narrowing to
suspicious slits. “Why?” I asked finally, a tremor running through me
that I couldn’t quite suppress. “Why do you want me back so badly?
You have Vera now. What could you possibly need me for?”
He didn’t answer. We stood there, face to face, close enough that I
could feel his breath on my skin, the heat of his body calling to mine
like a siren song my biology couldn’t ignore. The silence stretched
between us, thick with unspoken words and complicated history.
“The first time you demanded I return,” I said slowly, piecing it
together as I spoke, my fingers drumming nervously against the table
edge, “was right after Aiden showed interest in my abilities. You
couldn’t stand that I might slip from your control. And now…” I tilted
my head, studying him, a strand of hair falling across my eye that I
impatiently brushed away. “Now Allen looks at me like I matter, and

pushed myself upright, standing taller. “You can’t stand the thought
of not owning me, even if you don’t want me yourself. Fucking typical
Alpha bullshit.”
“You think you know everything,” Drake said, his voice dangerously
soft. “You think you understand what’s in my mind?”

pulse racing in my throat. He moved closer, his body nearly touching
mine, the air between us electric with tension that made the fine
hairs on my arms stand up.
“The cameras,” I whispered hoarsely, glancing up at the security
device in the corner of the room, my hand gesturing shakily toward it.
“This is a monitored space.”
Something like frustration flashed across his face, but he didn’t move
away, his breath hot against my ear.
“Have you been taking your contraceptives?” The abrupt change of
subject caught me off guard.
My stomach dropped like I’d hit freefall, blood draining from my face
as realization hit me. With everything happening with my mother, I’d
completely forgotten. Oh shit.

Drake’s touch, his scent, his hold over me. I scrubbed until my skin was raw and pink, cursing under my breath the entire time.
As soon as I got out, I wrapped a towel around myself with shaking hands and placed an emergency order for the morning–after pill, calculating delivery times with frantic precision, my wet hair
dripping onto the screen of my phone.
Another notification pinged–this time from Sophia. I opened it to
find a photo of Drake’s stepmother, Miranda Stone, with a young woman I didn’t recognize. The woman was heavily pregnant, perhaps
seven or eight months along, her hand resting protectively over her
swollen belly.
