Chapter 11

Kira’s Perspective

Lucas’s voice was calm yet precise as he spoke, “I’ve arranged your first moonlight herb treatment for two days from now. It’s crucial that you settle all your affairs before then because once we begin, you’ll go through intense bouts of weakness.”

I gave a small nod, forcing myself to look braver than I felt inside. “Will it be painful?” I asked, my voice trembling just a bit.

He didn’t sugarcoat it. “I won’t lie to you, Kira. Yes, it will hurt.” Lucas leaned forward, folding his hands together thoughtfully. “The herbs work by essentially poisoning your wolf’s system to slow the syndrome’s progression. The side effects are similar to what humans experience during chemotherapy — fatigue, nausea, and possibly hair loss.”

My fingers instinctively reached up to touch my long hair, which had always been my pride — thick, wavy strands that Rocco used to gently run his fingers through. The bittersweet memory tightened my chest painfully.

“How much time will this treatment buy me?” I whispered, barely able to voice the question.

Lucas sighed deeply. “It’s difficult to predict. The syndrome affects everyone differently. It could be months, but if we’re fortunate, it might stretch to two years.”

Two years. That might just be enough time to uncover the truth about Lyra and my father.

“I’ll be ready,” I said firmly, pushing myself to stand.

After finalizing the schedule for my treatment, I made my way to my father’s room. Seeing him lying there motionless, so fragile, pierced my heart anew. His once commanding presence was now reduced to a fragile shell.

The nurse, reviewing his chart, said kindly, “Your father’s care plan is set for the next six months. And don’t worry about the medical bills anymore.”

At least Rocco’s money was good for something. I gently squeezed my father’s hand before quietly whispering, “I’ll find out what happened, Dad. I promise.”

Leaning closer, lowering her voice to what she probably thought was a whisper, Harper asked, “So, how much did you get from the settlement? From what I hear, just breaking ties with Rocco Blackwood could leave you set for life in werewolf territory.”

I swallowed hard, the weight of my reality pressing down on me. “Just enough to cover Dad’s medical bills and for me to live on.” And enough to last the little time I have left, I thought bitterly.

Harper’s jaw dropped in disbelief. “What? That betraying Alpha gave you so little? After everything he did?” Her outrage was touching, if a bit misplaced. Money couldn’t fix what was wrong with me now.

“It’s enough,” I shrugged, not wanting to delve into the details. “I need to focus on moving forward, not dwelling on the past.”

Harper frowned, clearly not satisfied with my answer. “Well, if you need anything — money, a place to crash, whatever — I’m here for you. Seriously.”

“Thanks,” I managed a small, grateful smile. “Actually, I should get going. I’m moving out today and still have to pack.”
