Alpha's Regret After the Divorce by Christina novel Chapter 123

Chapter 123

“The compound appears stable,” I whispered under my breath, scanning the room cautiously. So far, no one had cast a suspicious glance in my direction… at least not yet.

I navigated carefully through the crowd, mentally noting faces and snippets of conversations, when my heart suddenly lurched as I spotted a familiar figure near the eastern corner of the room. Dominic—Rocco’s most trusted Beta—stood there, his presence sending a jolt of alarm through me. Without hesitation, I pivoted sharply and melted into the shadows behind a towering marble column.

Damn it. Damn it. My heart pounded erratically. If Dominic was here, then Rocco might be nearby as well.

“Stay calm,” Andy’s voice crackled softly through my earpiece. “Your vitals just spiked. What’s going on?”

I pressed my back harder against the cool marble, lowering my voice to a whisper. “Dominic is here,” I said. “If he’s present, Rocco could be too.”

“Keep your composure,” Andy urged, his tone steady but laced with tension. “Don’t let your personal history jeopardize the mission.”

I closed my eyes briefly, inhaling deeply to steady my nerves. I reminded myself: three years of rigorous training, countless hours of preparation. I couldn’t afford to let emotions cloud my judgment.

Slowly, I shifted my stance, putting more distance between myself and Dominic while scanning the crowd with renewed focus. According to intel, Triad members wore subtle accessories marked with small triangular symbols—easy to miss unless you knew exactly what to look for.

Within twenty minutes, I had pinpointed three possible targets: an older man sporting triangular cufflinks, a middle-aged woman whose necklace bore a delicate triangular pendant, and a younger man wearing a watch with similar geometric designs.

I edged closer to the woman, positioning myself near enough to catch fragments of her conversation as she spoke quietly to an attentive companion.

“…action before the end of the month…” I overheard her say.

From another angle, I caught another snippet as I pretended to admire a nearby painting.

“…experiment nearly complete…”

“Your vitals are showing irregular patterns,” Andy’s concerned voice came through again. “Are you okay?”

“I’ll manage,” I whispered through clenched teeth. “Just need… more information…”

When the pain eased enough, I splashed cold water on my face and made my way back to the gathering. As I stepped out, a sudden commotion near the center of the hall drew my attention. The crowd parted respectfully, hushed conversations fading into silence.

I immediately knew who commanded such reverence even before I saw him. My body instinctively melted into the shadows along the wall as Rocco Blackwood entered the room, impeccably dressed in a tailored black suit. His presence was magnetic, commanding, and intimidating all at once.

Oh god. My throat tightened painfully as I watched him from the darkness. Three years had not changed him—not one bit. He was still impossibly handsome, still exuding that predatory power that had once terrified and thrilled me in equal measure. The same man who had been my mate, who had betrayed me, who believed I was dead.

He looked exactly the same, but I… I was a completely different person now.
