The captain hesitated, his reluctance to confront Rocco’s Beta directly evident in the tight line of his jaw and the flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. After a heavy pause filled with unspoken tension, he finally gave a slow nod and moved on, his footsteps echoing softly down the corridor.
Once the captain disappeared from sight, Dominic turned to face me, his expression unreadable and guarded. “I don’t know who you are,” he said quietly, “but you clearly don’t belong here.”
A rush of adrenaline surged through me, muscles tensing instinctively as I prepared for either confrontation or escape—though which one I’d need remained uncertain.
“Follow me,” Dominic instructed in a low voice, his tone steady yet urgent. “There’s a service passage this way.”
Every instinct screamed that this was a trap, but my options were limited. I moved cautiously behind him, alert and ready to defend myself at the slightest hint of danger.
He guided me to a narrow, dimly lit hallway concealed behind what appeared to be an ordinary wall panel. “This passage leads out to the gardens,” he explained. “From there, you can find your way out.”
“Why are you helping me?” I asked, lowering my voice deliberately to disguise its natural femininity.
His face darkened with a shadow of conflict. “I serve Rocco,” he admitted, “but I don’t agree with what’s happening in this house tonight.” A flicker of regret crossed his features. “Rocco is being used. He’s drowning in grief and can’t see the truth of what’s going on.”
I took in his words silently, my mind racing to reevaluate everything I’d witnessed during the meeting. Was Rocco truly a willing player in this dangerous game, or merely a pawn caught in the Triads’ ruthless machinations?
“Thank you for the information,” I finally said, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside. “But I’ll find my own way from here.”
Dominic nodded, seeming to respect my caution. “The east fence has the fewest patrols tonight,” he offered as a final piece of advice.
Once I was alone in the passage, I quickly administered the stabilizing injection Andy had given me earlier. The cool liquid coursed through my veins, dulling the worst effects of the compound’s deterioration just enough to keep me steady.
