Alpha's Regret After the Divorce by Christina novel Chapter 139

Rocco’s POV

Each step I took down the mansion’s endless hallway felt like a battle against the storm raging inside me. My jaw was clenched so tightly that I could hear the harsh grinding of my teeth echoing in my ears. I needed control—desperately. The grand walls surrounding me seemed to close in, as if the portraits of my ancestors, their painted eyes cold and judgmental, were silently condemning me.

“Hold it together,” I whispered beneath my breath, willing myself to stay focused. “You’re on the edge of the truth. Don’t ruin everything now.”

With every footfall, memories of Kira flashed vividly in my mind—her radiant smile, the sound of her laughter, and the haunting image of her broken body sprawled across the jagged rocks. The water around her had turned a deep, cruel crimson. A sharp pain gripped my chest. That woman—the one behind the red mask—had given the order. She was the puppet master who had stolen everything from me.

Two Beta guards stood rigidly outside the reception room of the north wing, their eyes alert but expressions carefully neutral. As I approached, they gave respectful nods, though I was certain they could sense the turmoil beneath my calm facade. An Alpha’s emotions always found a way to seep through, no matter how well hidden.

I stopped just before the heavy oak door, inhaling deeply to steady myself. My hand hovered over the gleaming brass handle, and I forced my face into an expression of calm detachment.

“Revenge demands a clear mind, not blind fury,” I reminded myself, recalling an old lesson from my father that had guided me through these long three years of infiltration.

Then, I pushed the door open.

Inside, the room was dimly lit, with only the flickering fireplace casting dancing shadows over the antique furniture. The woman in the red mask stood by the window, her back turned to me, framed against the dark night sky. There was something about her stance—confident, almost arrogantly poised—that stirred the wolf within me, restless and eager beneath my skin.

“You wanted to see me?” I asked, keeping my voice steady, careful to hide the inferno of hatred burning inside.

Slowly, she turned, the firelight glinting off the crimson mask. “Please, sit down, Mr. Blackwood.” Her voice was smooth, cultured, laced with a dangerous calm. “We have much to discuss.”

She motioned gracefully toward the armchair opposite her. “Would you like a drink? It might be a long evening.”

I crossed the room and sat, my eyes fixed on the mask that concealed her face. “No, thank you.” Leaning back, I feigned relaxed confidence. “I assume this is about the security breach tonight.”

“If you intend to punish me for my team’s failure, I will accept full responsibility,” I said, meeting her gaze directly through the mask’s eyeholes. “The intruder was skilled. It won’t happen again.”

A soft laugh escaped her lips, catching me off guard. “What an interesting way to start. You think I summoned you here to reprimand you?”

She settled into her chair with fluid elegance, crossing her legs. “Tonight’s incident was merely a catalyst. It convinced me it’s time we… laid all our cards on the table.”

My pulse quickened, but I kept my face neutral. “I’m not sure I follow.”

Leaning forward slightly, she asked, “Tell me, do you know why you climbed so rapidly through the Triads’ ranks? Why you were entrusted with our most sensitive projects?”

I stuck to my cover. “My skills and resources are invaluable to the organization.”

Her voice suddenly turned icy, slicing through the pretense between us. “Cut the act, Rocco. I’ve seen your true motives from the very start.”

My muscles tensed involuntarily. “And what exactly do you think you know about me?”

“Revenge and resurrection,” she said, tilting her head as she studied me. “Such romantic dual purposes. All for that girl—Kira, isn’t it?”

I sprang to my feet, rage surging uncontrollably. “How do you—” My words caught in my throat as my eyes flashed gold, the wolf pushing hard against my restraint.
