I sat at the edge of my father’s hospital bed, watching him adjust himself against the pillows. The room was dim with only the bedside lamp casting a weak glow, creating shadows across his gaunt face. His expression was somber, his eyes carrying a weight I couldn’t quite
name.
My stomach tightened as I waited. After years of questions, I was finally going to hear the truth about Lyra.
“Several years ago, my father began, his voice low and raspy, “I received an anonymous letter.”
His gaze turned distant, as if looking through time rather than at me. “It described a young werewolf girl being mistreated. As an Alpha, when I receive information like this, I have a responsibility to investigate.”
I nodded, trying to ignore the rapid beating of my heart.
“After some searching, I found her in a rundown apartment at the edge of the city,” he continued, pausing to take a labored breath. “She called herself ‘Jane,‘ refused to give a last name or talk about her past. She said she had fled werewolf society because her mother abused her, and her family turned a blind eye.”
Dad’s voice softened. “The first time I saw Jane, she was covered in scars, but her eyes were defiant. In human society, she was equally
rejected and hurt. Homeless. Alone.”
“This Jane…” I asked softly, though I already knew the answer, “Did you know who she was from the beginning?”
Dad shook his head. “No. She was cautious, never speaking of her past or family. She only referred to herself as a ‘wolf without a pack.“”
“Then how did you eventually discover she was Lyra Blackwood?” My voice sounded steadier than I felt.
Dad’s expression grew complicated, pain flashing across his features. “That came much later… after our relationship had become… deeper.”
My stomach clenched, but I forced myself to remain calm. “What happened, Dad?”
“I helped her,” he continued. “Provided shelter, medical care, educational opportunities. At first, she was extremely wary, but gradually, she began to open up to me, sharing her painful experiences.”
I could picture it–a wounded girl finally finding safety, finding someone willing to listen. I felt proud of my father’s kindness, but simultaneously, an unsettling premonition grew inside me.
“As time passed, Jane developed feelings for me beyond ordinary gratitude.” Dad lowered his gaze to the sheets. “I’m not proud of this relationship, but at the time…”
I gently squeezed his hand. “Dad, I understand. You were alone for so long after Mom left.”
“I thought we could help each other heal.” He gave a bitter smile. “We spent some good times together in human society.”
I noticed how carefully he described the relationship, reflecting both on himself and respecting me as his daughter. I appreciated his honesty, but worried more about where this story was heading.

“What happened then?” I asked tentatively.
:
Dad’s expression darkened. “Everything changed when it came to medicine…”

He described how he funded Jane’s medical studies, how she showed extraordinary talent, excelled academically, with a promising future. “But Jane wasn’t satisfied with just helping humans. She became deeply interested in werewolf medicine. Initially, I supported her research, thinking it might help many werewolves. She acquired some ancient werewolf medical texts and immersed herself in them day and night.
My heart grew heavier as I began to foresee where this story was heading. “And then?”
“One time, Dad’s voice trembled slightly, “I accidentally found a photograph among Jane’s personal belongings. A Blackwood family photo.”
I was slowly understanding the whole picture. This is why Rocco thinks Dad did something to Lyra? Because he doesn’t know the full truth?

I gasped, the terrible image flashing through my mind.

“I immediately stopped the experiment and released the victim.” Dad’s voice shook with emotion. “That night, we had a fierce argument. She accused me of betraying her trust.”
My sympathy completely vanished, replaced by fear of Lyra. She wasn’t just a troublemaker; she was truly dangerous. Now I began to understand that the origins of the Triads organization might be connected to her.
“What did you do?” I asked quietly.
Dad looked pained. “I realized it was too late, Lyra had gone too far. I had to stop her.”
“Did you report her? Or tell the werewolf council?”
Dad shook his head. “First, I tried to convince her to turn herself in, to get treatment. I still… loved her.” He paused. “But when I discovered she was planning to expand the scale of her experiments, I knew I had to act.”
I could see Dad’s internal struggle: wanting to protect someone he once loved while needing to stop her from harming others. “I sought professional psychological help, hoping to treat Lyra’s mental issues. At the same time, I secretly contacted trusted werewolf elders, hoping for intervention through unofficial channels.”
Dad’s voice broke: “I couldn’t bear to watch someone I loved become a monster… I wanted to save her.”
The room was eerily quiet, with only the soft hum of medical equipment.
“But before I could implement my plan,” Dad said wearily, “she discovered my intentions. The next day, she was gone.”
