I rushed toward the eastern corridor, following the path I’d seen on the monitor. The building’s groans were becoming more frequent, more ominous. Time was running out.

“Kira!” I called as I approached the area where I’d spotted the figure. Dust swirled in the beams of emergency lighting that still

functioned.

I pushed past a partially collapsed doorway, entering what had once been a large experimental lab. Equipment lay scattered and broken across the floor, and at the center of the room stood a familiar figure.

“Kira!” Relief flooded through me.

She turned, and a smile spread across her face

a smile I hadn’t seen directed at me in years. My chest tightened at the sight.

“Rocco!” she exclaimed, quickly crossing the space between us. “Thank God you’re okay!”

She threw her arms around me in a tight embrace, pressing herself against my chest. I froze, stunned by the unexpected display of affection. Her scent filled my nostrils – familiar yet somehow… off. Maybe it was the dust and chemicals in the air masking her natural

smell.

“I was so worried,” she said, her voice trembling slightly as she pulled back to look at me. “I thought I’d lost you when that beam came

down.”

My brain struggled to reconcile this warm, affectionate Kira with the cold, distant woman who’d been regarding me with barely concealed contempt for days. Something felt wrong, but I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what.

“Are you hurt?” I asked, scanning her for injuries. Her movements seemed normal, no visible wounds, but there was something different about the way she carried herself.

She shook her head, a strand of hair falling across her face. “No, I’m fine. Just shaken up.” Her hand remained on my arm, fingers

squeezing slightly. “This place is falling apart. We need to get out of here.”

I nodded, still thrown by her sudden change in demeanor. “I found some documents in the data center. They seem to confirm what your

father said about Lyra’s research.”

“Really?” she asked, but her reaction seemed subdued compared to the intense determination she’d shown earlier when discussing Lyra. “We can look at them later. Right now, we need to focus on getting out alive.”
