Chapter 224
Rebecca looked up from her medical supplies. “He also had access to technology we haven’t seen before. Some kind of signal jammer that temporarily disabled our comms. By the time we got them back online, he was gone.”
“We think he’s working with someone,” Andy added. “Someone with resources and technical expertise.”
I nodded slowly, trying to piece this new information together with what we already knew. Lyra’s consciousness in Kim’s body. Ethan acting with newfound confidence. A mysterious partner with technical skills.
“So we have two separate threats working together,” I said, thinking aloud. “Lyra with her consciousness–transferring abilities, and Ethan with whatever he’s planning.”
“That’s our current theory,” Andy confirmed.
Despite the gravity of the situation, I felt a strange sense of relief. Focusing on the mission, on concrete problems with potential solutions–this was familiar territory. It gave me temporary shelter from the emotional storm I’d been caught in since confronting Rocco about Kim and the twins.
1 started mentally cataloging what we knew, what we needed to find out, and possible next steps. The familiar process was almost
comforting.
The conversation about Ethan gradually died down, and the helicopter fell silent again except for the constant roar of the engines. I leaned back in my seat, feeling the medication beginning to dull the sharp edges of my pain.
Andy shifted beside me, lowering his voice so only I could hear him.
“What happened between you and Rocco back there? When we arrived, the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife.”
I hesitated, unsure how much to share. But Andy had earned my trust many times over.
“He told me about Kim,” I said finally. “About how he abandoned Kim when she was pregnant with his twins… after I disappeared.”
Andy’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Kim lost Rocco’s children because of him?”
I nodded, feeling a strange hollowness in my chest. “Yeah. After I… was gone.”
