Kira’s POV
I limped down the metal steps of the helicopter, trying not to wince as my weight settled onto my injured leg. Every muscle in my body protested, but I forced myself to walk with as much dignity as possible. The last thing I needed was to look weak in front of my team.
The mansion’s security personnel swarmed around us immediately, their faces tight with concern. I recognized most of them- Rocco’s helpers. Their worried glances at my blood–stained clothes and bandaged arm made me straighten my spine even more.
“Ms. Silverstone, one of them said, stepping forward. ‘We’ve secured the perimeter as ordered. No suspicious activity reported.”
My father?” I asked, unable to keep the worry from my voice. My heart hammered against my ribs. “How is he?”
Marcus pushed through the crowd, his usually impeccable suit wrinkled from what looked like hours of vigilance. “Your father is stable, Kira. The medical team has been with him continuously.”
The relief that washed over me was so intense my knees nearly buckled. I exhaled slowly, nodding. “Thank you.”
“We should get inside,” I said, gesturing to Andy and the rest of the team. “We need to review what we found immediately.”
The walk to the mansion’s secure conference room felt endless. Each step sent little jolts of pain up my leg, but I kept moving. The weight of what we’d discovered at Ethan’s hideout pressed down on me–evidence that couldn’t wait.
Once inside, I sank gratefully into a chair at the head of the long mahogany table. Andy immediately began setting up his laptop and connecting it to the room’s display screen. Rebecca and the other team members spread out the physical evidence we’d recovered–sample vials, notebooks, and electronic devices.
I studied Andy’s face as he worked. His expression was unusually grave, his movements precise but tense. Whatever he’d found in the data we recovered, it wasn’t good.
“Alright,” I said once everyone was settled. “Let’s start with what we know.”
Andy nodded and pulled up the first set of files. “We recovered these from Ethan’s main computer. It’s heavily encrypted, but we’ve managed to break through the first layer.”
1 leaned forward, scanning the documents now displayed on the screen. Chemical formulas, brain scans, and pages of notes filled with technical jargon.
