Chapter 234
Kira’s POV
I couldn’t sleep. Not after everything that had happened today.
The conversation with my mother kept replaying in my head like a broken record. Twenty years of questions finally answered, but the hollow feeling in my chest remained. I’d spent my whole life thinking I wasn’t good enough, only to discover I was actually too strong- willed, too independent for her new family’s liking.
I pushed myself off the guest bed and padded across the plush carpet to the balcony doors. Sliding them open, I stepped out into the cool night air, grateful for the silence. The moon hung high above, nearly full, casting silver light across the manicured gardens below.
Sitting on the edge of a cushioned chair, I pulled my knees to my chest and stared at the stars. What a day. Meeting my mother after all these years, learning the truth about why she took Kim instead of me, discovering that Kim’s body was now inhabited by Lyra… it was almost too much to process.
I felt oddly empty. Not sad, exactly. Not even angry anymore. Just… drained. Like I’d been carrying this weight for so long, and now that it was gone, I didn’t know what to do with myself.
A soft knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts.
“Kira?” Andy’s voice came through the door, gentle and hesitant. “Are you awake?”
I considered pretending to be asleep, but honestly, company sounded better than being alone with my thoughts right now.
“Come in, I called softly.
The door opened, and Andy stepped in, holding two steaming mugs. His hair was slightly messy, as if he’d been running his fingers through it, and he’d changed into a simple t–shirt and sweatpants.
“I thought you might need this,” he said, lifting the mugs slightly. “Couldn’t sleep either?”
I gave him a small smile. “Not really. Too much going on up here.” I tapped my temple.
Andy nodded understandingly. “I figured. I thought you might want some company… if that’s okay?”
Andy’s eyes stayed on me, attentive and warm. “That must have been difficult to hear.”
“The weird thing is, it was almost a relief.” I turned the mug in my hands, watching the steam rise. “All these years, I tried so hard to be perfect. Got the best grades, became a doctor, tried to be everything I thought she would have wanted.” I shook my head. “I thought if I was good enough, smart enough, accomplished enough, I’d understand why she left me behind.”
“And now?”
“Now I know it wasn’t about me being deficient. It was about me being too much.” I glanced at him. “My father always encouraged my independence. My questions. My stubbornness. It drove him crazy sometimes, but he never tried to change me.”
Andy leaned against the railing, his expression thoughtful. “I can see that in you. That independence. It’s one of the things I admire
most.”
