Chapter 29
“Sisters?” The word left her lips like a bitter curse, as if it tasted foul. “Just being connected by blood means nothing, Kira. Where was this so-called sisterly bond when I was growing up as the outsider? When Mom dragged me from one place to another while you stayed behind with Daddy, safe and sound in your perfect little pack?”
A sharp ache gripped my chest. I hadn’t anticipated such raw, seething bitterness. “That wasn’t my fault—”
“You have no idea what I went through,” she interrupted, her voice rising with emotion. “When we finally came back to werewolf territory, do you know what they whispered behind my back? They called me the ‘half-raised wolf.’ Like I was some kind of defect because I wasn’t brought up in a proper pack.”
I swallowed hard, the weight of her words settling heavily on me. Mom had taken Kim away when we were still pups, tearing our family apart. I had never stopped to consider how deeply that must have hurt her.
“I didn’t realize—”
“Of course you didn’t,” Kim snapped, her hands instinctively resting over her swollen belly. “Little perfect Kira, Daddy’s favorite. You never had to fight for respect.”
My throat tightened, dry and scratchy. “Is that why? Is that why you took Rocco? To earn respect?”
For a moment, something flickered in her eyes—a glimpse of raw, unguarded truth.
“Being Luna changes everything,” she said, her voice softer now but burning with intensity. “When you’re the Alpha’s mate, no one dares disrespect you. No more whispers, no sidelong glances. They bow to you. They fear you.”
My heart sank as the pieces began to fall into place. “So this isn’t really about Rocco,” I murmured quietly. “It’s about power. About status.”
Kim’s expression hardened once again. “Don’t act so high and mighty. What would you know about clawing your way to the top? About proving yourself every single day?”
I looked at her, really looked at her, perhaps for the first time. Beneath the harshness was someone deeply wounded, someone who had felt excluded and less than whole. It didn’t excuse her actions, but it explained so much.
“But do you even love him, Kim?” I asked gently. “Rocco himself—not just the Alpha status?”
Her cheeks flushed a deep crimson. I could tell I’d struck a nerve.
“How dare you question my feelings!” Kim hissed, stepping so close I caught the scent of her perfume, sharp and floral, making my nose itch. “What I feel for Rocco runs deeper than anything you could possibly understand. I’m carrying his heirs—his blood will live on through me.”
