Chapter 33

Kira’s POV

“One week,” I echoed his words softly, my voice barely breaking the heavy silence that hung between us. The dining room suddenly felt cramped, almost suffocating, as if the walls were closing in. “And after that, you’ll get engaged to Kim right away?”

Rocco’s gaze remained steady and cold as he looked at me across the table, showing no flicker of emotion. “Yes. The announcement for the engagement is already being prepared.”

A sharp pang twisted inside me, a crack forming deeper within my heart. It wasn’t because I had any lingering hope that we might reconcile—those hopes had long since died—but because of the way he spoke about replacing me so clinically, as if I were nothing more than a faulty part to be discarded.

“I see,” I managed to say, my throat tightening painfully. “Is there a reason for waiting? Why not just do it now?”

For a brief moment, a shadow crossed his face—so fleeting I almost thought I imagined it. “There are… formalities that must be completed first.”

I nodded slowly, unable to trust myself to say anything more. What else was there to say? In seven days, I would officially be erased from his life. That thought should have brought some relief, but instead, I felt hollow, as if a part of me had been drained away.

The next morning, I waited until Rocco had left before glancing at my phone. A message from the werewolf private investigator made my heart leap:

“Couldn’t meet you earlier. Found evidence that might prove Derek Silverstone’s innocence. Fiona Scott at Lunar Psychiatric Facility has information. Urgent you speak with her.”

I straightened up, gripping my phone tightly. Evidence that could clear Dad’s name? My hands trembled slightly as I searched for details about the Lunar Psychiatric Facility—a remote institution known for housing mentally unstable werewolves and humans with dangerous knowledge about our kind.

After everything Rocco had shown me—the bloody photos, the damning testimonies—could it all be lies? Or was the evidence fabricated? I needed to uncover the truth for myself.

I dressed quickly, choosing simple, inconspicuous clothes that wouldn’t draw attention. My body felt unusually weak this morning, but I pushed through the fatigue. If Fiona held information that could vindicate my father, nothing would keep me from finding her.

I slipped out of the mansion while Dominic was distracted with a delivery at the front gate. Using a ride-sharing app on my phone, I secured a car that took me to the outskirts of werewolf territory. From there, I caught another taxi deeper into the secluded area where the facility was hidden.

The building was camouflaged at the edge of a dense forest, disguised as an old country mansion. Silver-infused fencing surrounded the grounds—not enough to harm werewolves, but sufficient to contain those who might shift uncontrollably.

“I’m here to see Fiona Scott,” I said quietly but firmly to the receptionist behind the counter.

Her eyes widened slightly as she immediately recognized my status, then narrowed with suspicion. “Are you family?”

“No,” I replied smoothly. “I’m with the Werewolf Health Association. We’re following up on her case.”
