Alpha's Regret After the Divorce by Christina novel Chapter 52

The city lights outside my apartment window flickered intermittently, casting restless shadows that danced across the walls of my small room. I sat perched on the edge of my bed, the weight of the night pressing heavily on my chest. Lucas had left hours ago, but his words lingered stubbornly in my mind, refusing to fade.

“You can’t stay in Rocco’s territory anymore.”

I curled into myself, pulling my knees close to my chest, the ache inside me both familiar and suffocating. The choice before me felt like an impossible chasm to cross. To leave werewolf territory meant risking exile from my pack—perhaps forever. For a werewolf, being cast out was nearly as devastating as death itself.

Yet staying felt like surrendering the truth to oblivion. If I remained here, how could I ever uncover what truly transpired between my father and Lyra? Rocco’s volatile temper could erupt without warning, and each day that passed, my strength diminished. Time was slipping through my fingers like sand.

“If I leave, I might never come back,” I whispered to the shadows. “But if I stay and do nothing, the truth will die with me.”

My father’s face surfaced in my mind—strong, kind, now lying still and fragile in that hospital bed. There was no real choice left to make.

Sleep came in fitful fragments, and morning arrived far too quickly. A sudden, sharp knock at the door jolted me fully awake.

“Rise and shine, sleeping beauty!” Harper’s cheerful voice floated through the door.

Dragging myself from the bed, I opened the door to find Harper balancing a tray piled with coffee cups and bagels in one hand, her phone clutched in the other.

“I brought breakfast—and bad news,” she declared, stepping past me to set the tray down on the kitchen counter. “Guess what’s all over the werewolf gossip channels this morning?”

“Do I really want to know?” I asked cautiously, reaching for a steaming cup of coffee.

Harper thrust her phone toward me, the headline making my stomach twist: “Blackwood Alpha to Formally Announce Engagement to Kim Hoggins at Full Moon Ceremony.”

“Asshole,” Harper muttered under her breath, taking a harsh bite of her bagel. “The ink on your divorce papers isn’t even dry yet.”

I set the phone down gently, trying to push away the sharp sting in my chest. “It doesn’t matter.”
