Alpha's Regret After the Divorce by Christina novel Chapter 55

Chapter 55

The tunnel ahead sloped downward, disappearing beneath a pool of dark, still water. The surface was eerily calm, mirroring the beam of our flashlight like a flawless glass pane.

Lucas glanced at me with a steady gaze. “It’s not a long stretch, but it’s completely submerged,” he explained quietly. “Take a deep breath, hold onto my hand tightly, and follow me through.”

My heart pounded wildly as I nodded, trying to steady my nerves. We stepped into the icy water together, the sudden chill sending sharp shivers coursing through my body. When the cold reached my chest, I inhaled deeply, bracing myself, then plunged beneath the surface.

The water was numbing, almost paralyzing. My lungs burned fiercely as we pushed forward in the darkness, Lucas’s firm grip the only anchor keeping me oriented. Just when I felt my breath would give out, we broke through to the other side, gasping desperately for air.

I sank against the tunnel wall, trembling uncontrollably. My soaked clothes clung uncomfortably to my skin, and my teeth chattered in a relentless rhythm.

“You’re freezing,” Lucas said, concern clear in his voice. Without hesitation, he slipped off his jacket and wrapped it snugly around my shoulders. “We have to keep moving.”

Minutes later, we arrived at a crucial fork where the tunnel split into two distinct paths. The sounds of our pursuers grew louder behind us, echoing ominously through the confined space.

Lucas halted abruptly, his face hardening with resolve. “Kira, we have to separate.”

“No! We promised to stay together,” I protested, clutching his arm tightly, unwilling to let go.

“Plans change,” he replied firmly. “This tunnel leads to two different exits. If we split up, at least one of us might get away.” He pointed toward the right-hand path. “That one goes north, toward the human city. The other heads east, into the deep forest. They’ll expect us to run toward civilization.”

I opened my mouth to argue, but he cut me off. “I’ll take the northern route and draw them away. You take the eastern path—it’s less known and harder to track.”
