Chapter 69

Rocco’s face darkened, his blue eyes clouded with a brewing storm. “There’s nothing to investigate here, Kira,” he said firmly. “Your father seduced my sister. He manipulated her, used her, and in the end, he’s the one responsible for her death. These aren’t questions to be solved—they’re facts.”

I met his gaze, refusing to back down. “Are they really facts? Or just what you’ve been told to believe?” I challenged, surprised by the boldness in my own voice.

His knuckles tightened on the steering wheel until they turned white. “I warned you to drop this,” he growled.

“It’s about my father, Rocco. I have every right to uncover the truth about what happened to him,” I insisted, my voice gaining strength. “You can’t expect me to simply accept your version without question, especially when it condemns my father so completely.”

“You’re being stubborn and foolish,” he snapped. “Some truths are better left buried.”

“Not this one,” I said, my tone resolute. “I won’t stop until I find answers. My father deserves justice, just like Lyra did.”

“Justice?” Rocco scoffed, disbelief coloring his voice. “What do you know about justice? Your father—”

“He’s lying in a coma, unable to defend himself,” I interrupted sharply. “And I won’t rest until I know exactly what happened between him and Lyra. You don’t get to decide what I can or cannot investigate about my own family.”

Rocco fell silent, clearly taken aback by my defiance. I was startled too—these words had slipped out before I could stop them. The old Kira would have cowered, apologized, maybe even begged for forgiveness. But after seeing Fiona’s lifeless body yesterday, understanding what had been done to her, something inside me shifted. I couldn’t be that frightened, submissive wolf anymore. For Fiona, for my father, and for myself, I had to be stronger.

After what felt like an eternity, Rocco finally broke the silence, his voice deceptively casual. “I’m having dinner at Kim’s tonight. With her family.”

I turned to look at him, confusion creasing my brow. Why was he telling me this? What game was he playing now?
