Chapter 7

Kira’s Perspective

Lucas’s voice cut sharply through the haze clouding my mind. “You know you’re like a wounded wolf, don’t you? Calm and composed on the surface, but beneath all that control, your instincts are crying out in pain.”

I gave a faint, tired smile. “Is it really that obvious?” I whispered. “I thought I was better at hiding it.”

There was a softness in Lucas’s eyes as he leaned forward in his chair, the subtle scent of moongrass clinging to him—a fragrance that painfully reminded me of Rocco, though Lucas’s smell was blended with hints of antiseptic and coffee. “I have some connections at the treatment center. I could help cover your father’s medical expenses—”

His offer struck a chord deep inside me, but I swallowed hard before replying, “That’s incredibly kind of you, Lucas, but…” I gestured weakly at my bandaged hands. “With my condition, I could never repay you.”

Lucas’s gaze darkened slightly, frustration flickering in his eyes. “I don’t care about that.”

My throat tightened painfully. “Lucas, I know you want to help, but…” I turned my face away, blinking back the tears threatening to spill. “I don’t have a future anymore. Why would you invest in someone who’s already fading away?”

My eyes fell to my wrapped hands, the offer tempting. The money would ease my immediate worries and ensure my father’s treatment continued uninterrupted.

My father’s voice echoed in my mind like a mantra: “A Silverstone always honors their debts, Kira. Our word is our bond.” No matter the hardship, I couldn’t betray that principle.

“I truly appreciate it, Lucas. I do. But no.” I met his steady gaze. “This isn’t how my father raised me. If I need help, I’ll turn to my best friend—even though she’s still overseas.”

Swinging my legs over the edge of the bed, a sudden wave of dizziness swept through me. “Right now, all I want is to see my father. I haven’t been able to visit him since his surgery.”

Lucas’s hands hovered near my shoulders, clearly worried I might collapse. “At least let me help you get there.”

I nodded, grateful. “Okay. Thank you.”

The special care unit was suffused with an eerie silence as I pressed my palm against the glass, staring at my father’s still, fragile form. Derek Silverstone, once a proud Alpha, now lay unconscious, tethered to machines that monitored every breath and heartbeat.

A nurse’s gentle voice broke the quiet. “We’ve managed to remove most of the toxin, but the damage to his system is severe. Only time will tell if he’ll pull through.”

I nodded numbly, unable to look away. My father—once the strongest Alpha I knew—now seemed so diminished beneath the white hospital sheets. His broad shoulders, once so commanding, looked hollow and frail in the thin gown. Seeing the breathing tubes supporting the man who once made other wolves submit with a mere glance twisted my heart painfully.

“Can I go in?” I asked, voice trembling.

The nurse shook her head softly. “I’m sorry. The toxin required an intensive cleansing ritual. He needs complete isolation for at least another day.”

I rested my forehead against the cold glass, memories flooding back. After Mom left with Kim, Dad never took another mate. He spent every full moon with me, telling stories under the stars, making sure I never felt alone. And now, I couldn’t even hold his hand.

Rocco’s bitter accusations echoed in my mind: Why don’t you ask your father what he did to my sister? Those words haunted me ever since he spat them at me by the lake.

What connection could there possibly be between my gentle father and Rocco’s sister? I bit my lip, searching through years of memories. Dad had always been passionate about helping young wolves adjust to human society.

“I need to find out the truth,” I whispered to myself.

After leaving the medical center, I spent hours calling everyone who might hold answers. Dad’s longtime driver, who had practically raised me? Supposedly recovering from a silver-tipped bullet wound in another territory—convenient timing.
