Chapter 9
Jane? Who could that be? A frown crept across my face as the name echoed in my mind. Then, a sudden realization hit me. My father had always devoted himself to guiding young werewolves, helping them blend into human society. Could it be that Jane was the alias Lyra had adopted while living among humans?
Without wasting a moment, I grabbed my phone and scrolled through my father’s old contacts. Under the letter “E,” I spotted “Ethan Morris,” accompanied by a note: “Promising, sponsored 2017.”
My finger hesitated briefly above the call button before I finally pressed it.
The phone rang three times before a calm male voice answered, “Hello?”
“Hi, is this Ethan Morris?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady despite the flutter of nerves.
“Yes, speaking. May I ask who’s calling?”
“This is Kira Silverstone, Derek Silverstone’s daughter.”
There was a pause on the other end. “Ms. Silverstone, it’s an honor to hear from you. How is your father? I heard he was… attacked with wolfsbane…”
“He’s still at the werewolf medical center,” I replied, feeling a tightness in my throat. “He’s in a coma.”
“This… could we meet in person to talk? Some things are better not discussed over the phone.”
We agreed to meet at a small café located on the outskirts of werewolf territory. As I walked back to my apartment, my mind swirled with confusion. Why had Ethan reacted so strangely to Lyra’s photo? What secrets was he hiding?
About thirty minutes later, my phone buzzed with an encrypted message from Ethan:
“The girl in the photo went by the name Jane Woods in the human world. Your father sponsored her roughly six years ago. She was an outstanding student. Mr. Silverstone arranged for her to attend a top university among humans. We can talk more when we meet at the café.”
I stared at the message, trying to piece it all together. Lyra, a pureblood werewolf, had been sent by my father into the human world under the name Jane? But why hadn’t she returned to the Blackwood family? None of this added up. The questions churned inside me, leaving me more determined than ever to uncover the truth.
