Chapter 90

I could sense the pain radiating from her voice. A knot tightened in my stomach, an unwanted surge of empathy I wasn’t prepared to feel. Despite all that had happened between us, hearing my twin sister suffer struck a deeper chord than I wanted to admit.
“I’m warning you,” Kim gasped, struggling for breath, “if you lay a hand on me, Rocco will tear your throat out—”

A sudden, louder blow interrupted her threat. Kim’s scream sliced through the air—raw, desperate, and primal. My heart pounded fiercely as I instinctively strained against the restraints binding me.
“Stop it!” I shouted, surprised by the strength of my own voice. “What do you want from us?”
The voice responded, now much closer, sending a chill down my spine. Although my blindfold prevented me from seeing, I could feel the presence looming just above me.
“It’s not your turn yet,” the voice said, calm but menacing.
Kim’s voice, now weaker and laced with pain, broke through the tense silence. “So, your target wasn’t just me all along?”
“Correct,” came the cold reply.
“Why?” I demanded. “Do you hate us personally? Or are you trying to hurt Rocco by attacking us?”
Kim’s tone shifted abruptly, the arrogance replaced by raw desperation. “Please… let me go. I don’t want to die. I’m pregnant!”
A sharp pain gripped my chest. I knew about her pregnancy, of course, but hearing her use it as a plea—a desperate shield—made my stomach churn.
“If you must kill someone, kill Kira!” Kim’s voice trembled with frantic urgency. “She’s Rocco’s former mate. She’s the one he truly loves!”
I froze, stunned. Had Kim just tried to bargain my life for hers? Even more shocking—had the proud, confident Kim just confessed that Rocco loved me, not her?
“Well, well,” the voice sneered, amusement dripping from every word. “The woman about to be marked as Rocco’s mate admits she’s not his true love? How utterly fascinating.”
Kim’s next words were broken, stripped of any pride or dignity. “It’s true. I’m not lying. Yes, we’re being marked, but he doesn’t love me. He never has.”
