Kingston moves, smacking Maddox upside the head. “Stop fucking around.”

“Of course,” he winces, rubbing his head. “Everyone knows this is your fucking around place.”

“Not really, I was focused on trying to pin someone.”

“The stabbed girl?” His head tilts. “I walked past her at the clinic, and she was not happy. But great aim.”

“I can’t take credit for that,” I say with a nervous laugh. “That was all my Noah.”

“The human girl?” He gasps, his eyes shifting between Kingston and me. “The tiny girl did that?”

“She’s more than a human girl, not having a wolf doesn’t put her at a disadvantage,” I tell him, my tone mildly défensive. I know that he means no harm, but judging her based on her phenotype and genotype feels wrong. “My Noah is great, she’s one of the best people I’ve met, she’s not just pretty, she’s smart, funny, compassionate, she’s wonderful. There’s no one like her.” I say, pausing when I notice how it sounds like I’m marketing her off to

him.

“Wow, Kingston.” Maddox whistles, “Do you hear that, she speaks so highly of her, like she’s a God.” He says. You better watch her, you have competition, and she comes with knife-throwing skills.” He chuckles, tapping my foot. “I’m done here.”

That startles me, the swelling on my foot is going down, and I don’t feel any pain despite focusing on the injury. ” What?”

“How does your foot feel?” He asks, observing intently. “Try to move it around.”

“It’s fine,” I say, wiggling my foot. “You didn’t have to distract me, I can take a little pain.”

“You can,” he nods. “But but that brooding shadow you’ve acquired can’t bear to see you hurt, and I don’t want my bones rearranged because you squirmed.”

My cheeks flush, and I can barely meet his gaze. “That’s ridiculous,” I say, not expecting to hear a word out of King, but he speaks.

“I would, baby.” He confirms, arms crossed over his chest while he stares at me like a gem in a glass casing he is sworn to protect. “The thought crossed my mind three times already.”

I can’t help but laugh, Maddox and Damien are the same person when it comes to antagonising Kingston, D might be the best at it, but Maddox is right there in second place.

Kingston groans, sitting by me this time. He drapes an arm over my shoulder, and I lean on him. “I’ll get him.” He grumbles.
