“I am,” I repeat. But he doesn’t seem to get it, his frown turns upside down almost instantly.

He nods to himself, “Lets fix that.”

“Yeah,” I swallow, tears clouding my vision again. It’s long overdue anyway. “Let’s end this now, I’ll go back to my place, and you won’t come looking for me. You won’t talk to me, look at me, you will pretend I don’t exist, and everything we had was a fever dream.”

“No,” he snarls. “I am not ending anything, I can’t pretend I feel nothing for you.”

“Then what can you do?”

“Let me marry you,” he says.

This time, I know I heard him just fine. I blink the tears away, stunned by his thought process. I tell him he’s married, and his solution is to marry me? The idea makes my heart sink, it’ll never be true, it’ll never happen to me, not with him. “What?” He asks, his eyes searching mine for something as stupid as what he said, but I have none of it right now.

“You must have lost your head when you hit the headboard because you just said some stupid shit.”

“Why is it stupid?” He asks, draping his arm over me, his fingers playing on my waist.

“Because you’re married already?” I frown, “And I’m not marrying a mated man, it's the most stupid thing I’ve ever heard.”

A small smile creeps onto his lips, making me relax. “It got you to stop crying.”

“I have to see her every day, Rowan.” I tell him, “And I don’t want to leave because I’ll miss you,” I admit. “I don’t know what to do here.”

Again, he smiles, wider this time. “Should I move in with you?”

“For Christ's sake.”

“Bad idea?” He smirks, “I thought it was good, we could be together more.”

“And where does that leave her?” I ask, feeling unworthy of saying her name when I’m naked in bed with her mate.

“We’re not discussing her,” he tells me. “She’s okay, she’s fine. You’re—” he pauses, eyes wide like he just caught himself before he said something I shouldn’t know.

“I’m what?” I frown.

“You just need more…” he trails off, trying to find the right words but there's nothing right about this, no matter how right it feels, I know we are wrong. “I can’t leave you alone, Noah. We’re bonded now.”

“What bonded?” I frown, an eyebrow raised at him. “You are bonded to her.” I snap, pushing at his chest with my finger.

He grabs my hand and with a gentle tug, pulls me down the mattress, hovering over me. He stares at me for a moment, his gaze lingering on my neck. My eyes widen I realise what he plans on doing. “No,” I gasp, slapping a hand over my neck. “You’re not going to mark me, Rowan!” I scold.

“Relax,” he smiles. “It won’t stick, I just want to give you a tiny mark that will—”

“It’ll warn everyone to stay away from me because I’m owned.” I finish for him. “You’re not slick, Rowan, just because I don’t have a wolf doesn't mean I’m clueless.”

“Didn’t assume that at all,” he smiles. “You’re very intelligent, hero.” He says, pulling my hand away so he can try to mark me again.
