“I don’t think so, but Noah is—”

“What are you going to do?” I frown. “Because if you were Kingston? You’d be telling this story as you live your second life.”

His lips pull into an amused smile, brief and replaced by instant concern. “Noah is thinking about leaving, I can see it in her eyes.”

I pause. We haven’t discussed that, and she has been wanting to end things with him, but I didn't think she would resort to leaving. “It might be what’s best for her.”

“It’s not,” he argues. “She belongs here now, I love her, Ellie.”

“No..” I gasp. “You said it,” I whisper. “You went from thinking it to admitting it. Rowan, that's messed up,” I slap his arm. “You can’t be in love with my Noah, what about Danielle?”

“She knows.”

“Knows that you're in love with my best friend?” I scoff. “I doubt it because you wouldn’t be standing here talking to me.”

“It’s complicated, but convince her to stay, please. I will owe you my life.”

“I don’t want her to leave Rowan,” I sigh. Noah is my best friend, I’ve not lived a day without her in the last six years, and when I finally did, I was fucking depressed. More than I usually was. “But leaving might be right for her, I mean what does she get out of staying here? My Noah deserves more than being second pick, being your mistress.”

“She’s not.”

“You falling for her doesn't change that,” I almost yell. He is aware of Noah’s history, he knows why she avoids relationships, and he still dragged her into his marriage? “She won’t stand for it.”

“I’ll explain later, but help me now.” He coos, his gaze pleading. “I promise you won’t regret it.”

“I already regret it,” I say with an eyeroll. “How could you put her between you and mate? It doesn’t seem fair, you and Dani have so much to work out, and had you done that after losing your baby, then this wouldn’t have happened.”

He puts his pinky finger out, waiting for me to hook mine in his. And when I do, he grins. “I promise I will take care of Noah, I won’t hurt her.”

“Better not,” I smile. “I’ll forget you’re my best friend too.”

“You’ll love me again when you see what we made you,” he smiles, winking as he backs away.

“Wait,” I frown. “What did you make me? Can I see it?”

He puts a finger on his lips and shakes his head. I don’t press further, if they're working on a surprise and he lets it slip, Noah will have a fit and cancel it altogether. I can't be trusted around surprises, so I let it go altogether.

I head back upstairs to his room, looking for Danielle. The door is ajar and I can see Danielle nursing a bottle of wine and staring at something. “Danielle?” I call, guilt clawing at my chest for agreeing to help Rowan make Noah stay. She’s all alone here while he just watches Noah sleep.
