“Well, at the hospital when—”
“Not now, Danielle.” Rowan snaps.
“Oh my God,” I gasp. “You two...” I motion between them.
“Noah, no.” Rowan shakes his head, but it’s too late, I’ve already caught on.
“Is this what this was?” I gasp, choking on the lump in my throat. “You were trying to get me pregnant so you could fulfil her dream?”
“No,” he argues, his gaze pleading, pure, but I’ve seen it a thousand times, and I’m wondering if I just happened to fall for it. “I wasn’t trying to get you pregnant, I would never do that to you.”
“You did!” I snap, pointing to the test that Danielle is clinging to like it belongs to her. He told her it would, they had a deal.
I grab the test from her, sickened and infuriated by what they’ve done to me. Still, her smile doesn’t fade. “I’ll call mom!” She says, her tone even more than excited as she runs outside the room, excited to go and talk to her mother-in-law about her husband knocking up an idiot to have a baby for her.
“I’m sorry, that wasn’t meant to happen.” He swallows. “I swear to you that’s not why I’m with you.”
“So what did she mean, Rowan?” I snap, “You best speak fast and make sense, or I’m going to stab you with this fucking proof of life.” I warn, holding the damn plastic like a weapon.
“Take a seat,” he coos, taking my arm.
I pill away instantly, “I’m not interested in sitting!”
“You have to,” he says. “I have a lot of things to tell you, but keep an open mind.”
“An open mind?” I scoff. “I’m about as open-minded as it gets, Rowan, but knocking me up to fulfil your mate's dream is fucked up!” I push at his chest. “Why did you do that to me? Why didn’t you two find a surrogate like normal people?”
“Noah, stop.” He restrains me. “Nothing like that happened, let me explain.” He softly says, “First sit down.”
I suck in a breath, left with no other choice but to sit down, hoping for some other sort of explanation, but nothing he can say right now will change reality. He used me, he used me to fulfil Danielle’s dream and keep her happy. I didn’t matter, I was simply part of the plan.
I sit with my hands crossed over my chest, staring expectantly at him. His eyes shift between me and the test in my hand a couple of times before he actually sleeps. “The reason Dani wanted an open marriage was so that I’d have a baby with someone else.”
“You—”
“Listen, Noah.” He interrupts me. “I wasn’t going to do it, I clearly said no to her, so when I say that is not what happened with you, believe me.”
“I’m on fucking birth control!” I snap. “And you still got me pregnant, you expect me to believe it's a coincidence after what happened.”
